Signed M101-5 Sporting News

Published in 1916, these cards are commonly referred to as Sporting News cards. They were issued
with a variety of different advertising backs, including this scarcer Successful Farming reverse.
This card of Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander sold for $1,200 on June 14, 2008 in an ebay live auction, sponsored
by RegencySuperior. As described in the auction:
A scarce card with a scarce autograph! This is the Grover Alexander
card from the Successful Farming series of 200 from 1916. The card carries the same image as several others from the era,
most notably Sporting News (M101-5) and Weil Bakery (D329). The card alone with a common player in poor condition could nearly
be an auction lot, but THIS card is not only for Ol' Pete, but also signed by Ol' Pete! He has signed at the very bottom of
the card in pencil, which has faded a bit with time. The card itself would likely be graded Poor-to-Fair, mostly due to the
large crease across the middle. But condition is not a huge factor with this card as, most importantly, the autograph has
been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA. This card was issued when Alexander was with the Philadelphia Phillies; he
would go on to have a stellar career with the Phils, Chicago Cubs and St Louis Cardinals, finishing tied for third in all-time
wins with 373. An outstanding find!
