BRAINWAVE BIOFEEDBACK TRAINING for DEPRESSION

Neurofeedback offers a new modality for treating depression.

Neurofeedback training impacts the basic mechanism by which the brain controls its physiological states. By using EEG biofeedback training the person learns to regulate a normal state of arousal. With this neurofeedback training we can see all the symptoms of depression begin to normalize. For example, the person may begin to sleep normally, his quality of thought improves, he becomes more active and more functional. In general, a normal range of behavior and affect begins to return.

It appears at this time, EEG biofeedback training is effective on depression regardless of how the person became depressed, i.e. whether it is genetically predisposed, early childhood trauma, or an emotional experience. We often find as training proceeds the client may find that medication can be tapered. No medications should be changed without discussion and coordination with the prescribing physician.

Neurofeedback for depression is the process whereby we feed back to the individual information about the way his brainwaves are functioning. By giving immediate feedback the individual is able to learn how to control his various brainwave states. This is a learning process that helps the individual to establish self control. After training, the individual has an ability to control his various brainwaves which will reflect in a change in his behavior and emotions. The person’s emotions are no longer at the mercy of all of the external events going on in his life.

There is evidence that once a person experiences a depressive episode, subsequent episodes are more likely. Hence training the brainwaves to remediate depression fully may have a beneficial effect of making subsequent reoccurrences much less likely.

I am pleased to be able to offer this dynamic new therapy as an adjunct to psychotherapy and medications.
