SLEEP APNEA
SLEEP APNEA
Does H.R.V. Training have a role in treatment of sleep apnea?
In my opinion, yes, HRV training can be very useful as an adjunctive treatment if a patient is having difficulty tolerating
the sleep mask due to agitation, irritation, emotional over-arousal, anxiety when they are attempting to use their C-Pap.
Sophisticated use of the relaxation/ breath-work fundamental to HRV training, in conjunction with the patient actually wearing
the sleep mask during the biofeedback training, can help a patient learn to relax and go on to sleep despite the presence
of the new equipment in their sleep environment.
At a recent neurofeedback training, where the HRV was being discussed as an adjunct to neurofeedback training, I met an
internist working in a sleep lab. She was there specifically to learn how to incorporate neurofeedback and HRV in the treatment
of sleep disorders.
Does Neurofeedback Training have a role in treatment
of sleep apnea?
Neurofeedback can be useful in addressing some of the
cognitive and energy problems that are a sequelae to sleep apnea. However, Neurofeedback cannot address the fundamental breathing
problem, nor address the physical problems that develop from untreated sleep apnea (The heart problems, lung problems, and
metabolic problems, such as weight gain.) This is why it is of paramount importance that patients have their sleep breathing
problems addressed with C-Pap or other recommended treatment as recommended by their sleep specialists.
