Hats With Hugs

ROLL BRIM HATS

with optional flower

This quick and easy basic roll brim hat is knit on a 16" circular needle, or a set of double pointed needles, which eliminates the need for a seam and making for a more comfortable hat..  If you are a person who hesitates to use circular or double pointed needles then the hat may be knit on straight needles working back and forth in stockinette stitch.  If using straight needles when shaping top rows 2, 4, 6, and 8 simply purl across and then on row 10 P2 together across.  It is very important that these hats be made from soft yarn.  Although the pattern is “basic”, feel free to use your imagination, embellish and pattern the hats to your fancy.

KNITTED FLOWER

Use this knitted flower to embellish the basic knitted hat.  Use the same yarn as the hat is knit from or a contrasting yarn, color or texture for variety.  Directions call for the flower to be knit using single strand of yarn, however, you could create a larger flower by simply using a double strand of yarn and the same directions.  Another option is to place a fancy (or plain) button in the center of the flower.  The size of the flower can be adjusted by using different types of yarns and needle sizes.  HAVE FUN~

ABBREVIATIONS

K = Knit    P = Purl   St(s) = stitch(es)   YO= Yarn Over needle   tog = together

With straight needles cast on 47 sts

Rows 1, 2 & 3) P1, * YO, P2 tog, Repeat from * to end

Row 4) Purl

Work the following three rows at a firm tension to gather center of flower

Row 5) *K2 tog, Repeat from * to last st, K1

Row 6) *P3 tog, repeat from * to end

Row 7) K3 tog, K2 tog, K3tog = 3 sts

Cut yarn at least 12” long and run thru sts to fasten.  Sew short inside seam of flower together.  I usually position the flower on the hat just above the roll brim and sew right thru to the hat and secure the flower and hat in this manner.  You can also sew across the flower in an X-fashion to secure and hold in place.
