Frankly, Montclair has become the restaurant capital of north Jersey. But there are good choices everywhere. Since 1933 the NJ state laws control the licenses to serve diners their favorite beverage. Montclair has 12-13 licenses (one for every 3000 population-39,700) yet over 50 restaurants. Ironically, the population in 1933 was 43,000 and it had 10 restaurants. 75 years to update state liqour laws apparently is not long enough. "Bring Your Own" (BYO) is the rule, not the exception. It is cheaper to bring your own, important in this recession. A restaurant may not advertise that it permits beer and wine consumption, per the 1933 law. BYO is for Beer and Wine only. Re-corked wine goes in the trunk of your car. They seem to have thought of everything for us in New Jersey. Bloomfield Avenue is "restaurant row" with many choices. On Walnut Street for Egan's Irish Pub- 973 744-1413, Trumpet's Jazz Club-  973 744-2600 and the amazing Richie Cecere's Dining and Night Club- 973 746-7811 where Friday and Saturday night the best show this side of Las Vegas happens.
