 Pope Declares Father McGivney Venerable...
Pope Benedict XVI Saturday approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The pope’s declaration significantly advances the priest’s process toward sainthood and gives the parish priest the distinction of “Venerable Servant of God.” If canonized, Father McGivney would be the first American born priest to be so honored
“All of us who are members of the Knights of Columbus are profoundly grateful for this recognition of the holiness of our founder,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “The strength of the Knights of Columbus today is a testament to his timeless vision, his holiness and his ideals.”
Worried about the religious faith and financial stability of immigrant families, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus with the help of several men of St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven in 1882 to help strengthen the faith of the men of his parish and to provide financial assistance in the event of their death to the widows and orphans they left behind. He was also known for his tireless work among his parishioners.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., Aug. 12, 1852, Michael Joseph McGivney, was the first of Patrick and Mary (Lynch) McGivney’s 13 children, six of whom died in infancy or early childhood. His parents, natives of Ireland, had immigrated to the United States during the 19th century. Patrick was a molder in a Waterbury brass mill, where Michael himself worked for a brief time as a child to help support the family.
From an early age, however, he realized a calling to the Catholic priesthood. After studying in several seminaries, he was ordained in that Baltimore’s historic Cathedral by Cardinal James Gibbons Dec. 22, 1877.
He took up his first assignment, as curate at St. Mary’s Church, New Haven, Conn., Jan. 2, 1878. Father McGivney was named pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Conn. in 1884. He became seriously ill with pneumonia in January 1890, and died Aug. 14, 1890 at age 38.
The cause, or process, for Father McGivney’s sainthood, was opened by Hartford Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, in December 1997. The cause was presented to the Vatican in 2000, where it has been under review by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. With the pope’s recent decree, and the authentication of a miracle at Father McGivney’s intercession, the priest could be beatified. A second miracle would be required for canonization.

2008 “Steak Burn”

Our annual Steak Burn will be held on Friday,  July 25 at the Fred Wisor camp along the Susquehanna River in Curwensville.  Sir Knights, Priests and Deacons are invited to attend.  A committee was appointed by the FN to have everything well planned and

under control.  Our musically talented brothers will entertain us with Polka music as well as old time favorites.  Brother Harry Fye always does an excellent job of cutting us some of the finest steaks money can buy.  We will need  help with the set up and the clean up and removal of our “stuff”.  Our thanks to Fred and Irene for the gracious use of their facility.

May God bless...

Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP)

Through the Knights of Columbus Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP), the Pope John Paul II Assembly "adopted" a seminarian and provides him with financial assistance and moral support.  Our adopted seminarian,  Jonathan R. Schmolt, a member of our assembly, received another check for $500.00 from our Assembly.   RSVP money is used by seminarians and those in religious formation for tuition and books, car insurance and maintenance, travel during vacations, emergency expenditures and other living expenses. Knights provide more than financial support, though.  Assembly members are requested to write letters to seminarians, sponsor dinners for them, invite them to join the Order and, most importantly, pray for vocations.  Contact Jonathan R. Schmolt  C/O St. Mary’s Seminary & University 5400 Roland Ave. Baltimore, MD 21210.

Comptroller’s Report…

 SK Richard Ruth

This is dues collecting season. We have 37 members who have been sent 2nd Notices. Thank all who have already paid saving the time and postage for reminders. The COAL season for 2007 is over. Lessons learned are: advise members to leave staples in the stub books. We had to align and re-staple about 20 books. The stub police charge $1.00 per book for re-stapling, as a double digit percentage did not sell any books we should mention that buying one book would be a better decision than selling none.  Dick                                                   <><><><><>

Question:  How should a member of the Color Corps receive Holy Communion when he is dressed in full regalia?

Answer:     When practical, the Color Corps should receive the Eucharist from the main celebrant.  The Honor Guard process to the celebrant in a single file, left hand grasping and controlling the sword and scabbard and the right hand holding the chapeaux over the left shoulder.  Unless very special circumstances exist, the Eucharist should be received under one species only.  Receive the Eucharist on the tongue.

Do not receive the Body of Christ in a gloved hand, nor do Color Corps members remove the glove in order to do so.  Because both gloved hands are being used to control the sword and hold the chapeaux,  Color Corps members do not receive the cup with the Blood of Christ.  After the reception  of the Holy Eucharist, the Honor Guardsman will return to his seat, or in some circumstances return to a designated area to reform the Honor Guard.
