I have been tinkering with puzzles and building-block castles since I was a kid. The
first wooden structure I built was a bar in my basement for me and my
pals. (Talk about functionality!). After college I began working with a contractor and learned the building and remodeling
trade. As time progressed I felt a natural gravitation towards carpentry. Beginning with framing, I worked my way into the
more precise areas of trim carpentry and cabinetmaking. AND, as is the case with most other woodworkers, once I built
my first piece of real furniture I "caught the bug" and it was all over. I became a full-time furniture maker and never swung
a hammer again. (Well, not literally, but framing and trim work are not my focus nowadays).
The other passion in my life since childhood has been music. I played drums in jazz
and blues groups for 30 years doing the whole touring and recording thing. Oh the stories I can tell...The
reason I bring this up is because there are complementary and parallel aspects to music and carpentry. Both require artistic
qualities of sensitivity and trained hands to create a masterpiece. And oddly enough there needs to be a strong mathmatical,
geometrical intuitiveness to design/build well proportioned furniture, and to compose great music. Having the background in
both areas of study gives me the proper tools to continue my quest of producing fine quality works of art. And, it is my hope that
these creations bring pride, inspiration, and pleasure to those who have an appreciation for such things.
