I like to think she still leaves a WAKE in the OCEANS OF THE WORLD.
Call sign STRAW BOSS -ships motto GO GALLANTLY.
My Tribute to a Highly Decorated Summner Class Destroyer USS WALKE DD723. And
to her predecessor DD416 which was lost November 14 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal along
with 82 of her crew including her Captain Thomas E. Fraser . And
to all the crews that served aboard them. I know for over 3 years WALKE fed me, kept me warm, and always gave me
a place to sleep. In turn i kept her clean and looking like the LADY she was. I helped keep her fueled and replinished, She
let me steer her to places i would never have been able to go without her. Both ships were also Fighters, When called
on they went into the Heat of Battle, there crews Protecting them from HARMS WAY, there Skippers always thinking
of There SHIP, and there Crews First, and then Themselves. Walke earned 6 BATTLE STARS for WW2, 4 Battle Stars
for the KOREAN WAR, and 7 BATTLE STARS for Her Actions in VIETNAM. DD416 earned 3 Battle Stars for her World War 2 service. WALKE lost
15 of her crew on January 6 1945 during a Kamikaze attack (see ships history) and another 26 on June 12 1951 when the ship
hit a mine while steaming 60 miles off the Korean coast. We lost 1 crew member on our 1960 West-Pac Cruise. This page is dedicated
to the 124 WALKE Sailors Still On Patrol. And to the many crews over her life span that were her life blood and
soul.To the good times the bad times and the sad times,we never took anything from her when we crossed the gangplank
for the last time. But in later years we learned she gave back to us much more than we could have imagined
at the time.

OF V.F.W. MAGAZINE
June 12 1951 (Walke) was screening for the carriers 70 miles
east of the Korean Coast port of Wonson when at 7:40 am a huge explosion shook the Walke, the blast hit the aft crews
quarters and catching many of the crew in there bunks, two of the three large bearthing compartments were destroyed and a
third flooded .The ship was listing 10 degrees to port and the stern hung low in the water Capt (Marshall Thompson)
reduced the Walkes speed to 5 knots and ordered all possible weight including men transfered to the starboard side of the
ship, port side fuel was pumped to starboard tanks, or dumped into the the sea .The ship righted itself and dead and wounded
were transfered to other ships. (The Walke) then proceded at reduced speed to Sasebo Japan for repairs. In there shipmates
memory and showing Naval Pride the remaining crew somehow scrounged a set of
dress whites and when the wounded WALKE limped into Sasebo harbor on June 14 the ships deck was filled with "sharpley dressed
smartley saluting sailors" Marshall Thompson wrote "we suffered damage and losses but we are no way beaten". 26 of the Walkes
crew killed in action 40 wounded.

USS MEAD missed two survivors from Walke,Seaman Dale E. Land and Machinist
Mate Harold Taylor. After two days and nites in the water they reached Guadalcanel, but behind Japanese lines. They moved eastward, stealing
food from Japanese bivouacs. After finding a Japanese rifle and ammunition bandolier, they took up a sideline of sniping, and
killing a number of Japanese.Taylor lost his life in the struggle to survive, but Land, who staggered to within shouting distance
of US lines and was picked up,delirious, with a temperature of 106, did recover from his ordeal.
