There are many plastinated-corpse exhibits traveling the world. BODYWORLDS and BODIES...the
Exhibition are the two most prominent, although Our Body: The Universe Within is also touring the U.S. at this
time. While the exhibits may appear to be similar, the sources of the displayed corpses are quite different. Clear
up the confusion.

Where the bodies and organs come from, according to the exhibit promoter:
|
The BODYWORLDS exhibitions rely on the generosity of body donors; individuals who bequeathed that,
upon their death, their bodies could be used for educational purposes in the exhibitions. Currently, the Institute for Plastination
has a donor roster of 8000 individuals, 490 are already deceased. (Source: Official Website)
|
All of the bodies were obtained through the Dalian Medical University Plastination
Laboratories in the People's Republic of China. (Source: Official Website)
Premier says that it has "[Chinese] government certificates that guarantee none of the bodies had been a
murder victim, prisoner, mental patient or aborted fetus."
Premier states that it is paying $25 million over five years to rent the bodies and organs
it is exhibiting.
|
Did the people displayed in the show give their consent to be plastinated / exhibited?
|
All of the full-body plastinates and the majority of the specimens are from these body donors; some specific
specimens that show unusual conditions come from old anatomical collections and morphological institutes. (Source: Official
Website)

Issues page for more on this topic.

"[Roy Glover - spokesperson for BODIES...the Exhibition] states that 'since the bodies were either
unclaimed or unidentified, obtaining consent was impossible.'" - Detroit Metro Times
Since BODIES...the Exhibition began touring, Premier Exhibitions, Inc. has consistently
stated up-front that all of the bodies displayed in the exhibition were unclaimed and unidentified.
Premier is renting the cadavers and organs from China's Dalian Medical University, which acquired the unidentified, unclaimed
corpses from police. This being the case, Premier has also consistently admitted that since all of the people were unidentified
and already dead upon arrival at Dalian, none of the bodies or organs in BODIES...the Exhibition was donated.
All were used without the consent of the individuals or their families.
