Welcome to the Web Site of the Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League

The PVYBL consists of nine associations.  Historically, the associations have organized teams for play in the Mickey Mantle and Connie Mack Divisions of the American Amateur Baseball Congress and its local affiliate, the Western Massachusetts Amateur Baseball Congress.

Mickey Mantle activity is for youngsters who are 15 and 16 years old or younger, while the Connie Mack division serves players who are 17 and 18 years of age.   More specifically, the Mantle division is for youngsters who were born on or after May 1, 1995.  Connie Mack play is for those who were born on or after May 1, 1993.

The associations of the PVYBL are located in Amherst, Athol, Deerfield, Easthampton,  Greenfield, Northampton, Southampton, South Hadley, and Shelburne Falls.  In 2012, these associations organized about 105 youngsters for play on eight Mickey Mantle division teams. The associations did not form Connie Mack league squads, however.  In 2011, the associations of the PVYBL organized eight Mickey Mantle teams and four Connie Mack squads.

The PVYBL will function independently of the AABC, this summer, like the league has for the past four years.  The national championship schedule of the AABC requires the cessation of league activity after the first week of July. The Massachusetts scholastic tournament prevent most Mantle and Mack teams from starting until about June 10.   Hence, most teams would experience only a 30 day summer season under AABC arrangements.

Consequently, the Directors of the PVYBL voted, again, to forgo play in the AABC national championships and play a six week seasonal schedule.  The seasons of both Mantle and Mack teams will conclude with tournament play during the last week of July.

LEAGUE ALIGNMENT
During the 2005 to 2009 period, the league's Mickey Mantle teams were aligned in two divisions, based upon the interest and ability of team members.  The PVYBL organized only an A Division during 2012.  This division consisted of teams from Amherst, Athol, Frontier, Greenfield,  Northampton, and South Hadley.

LEAGUE SCHEDULE
Each of the Mickey Mantle A Division teams of the PVYBL played 18 regular season games.  Also, each team participated in a double-elimination tournament at the conclusion of the season.

In 2013, the PVYBL season will begin on June 5.  Mantle seasonal play will conclude on July 20.  The Mantle tournament will be conducted during the fourth week of July.

LEAGUE RULES
The Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League observes the Rules of Major league Baseball, AABC rules, and some special PVYBL rules.  The Rules of Major League Baseball are used in professional baseball and in scholastic play in Massachusetts.  Generally, AABC rules define the eligibility of players, pitching limits, and competitive arrangements in  tournaments.  These rules are published in the AABC Handbook, which can be copied at the AABC website.  Finally, league rules include league protocols for cancellations and postponements, among other matters.  PVYBL game Rules and Procedures are listed on a separate page of this site.

TEAM AFFILIATIONS
A youngster who wishes to participate in PVYBL activity should contact the Commissioner or one of the Association Directors or team coaches in his area.  The Directors and Coaches are listed on other pages of this site. Generally, the organizational territories of PVYBL associations correspond to local high school districts.  Consequently, the composition of association teams is similar to that of local scholastic teams.  However, a youngster may choose to play in the area in which he resides, the area in which he attends school, or, via league waiver,  for a team in another area.

LEAGUE COMMISSIONER
The Commissioner of the Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League is Artie Burke.  He can be contacted at 413 863-2452 or by using the link provided on this page.
