Recent Work

Here is an overview of my recent work. I am delighted to report that one of the rubberneckers has finally found a home! He successfully auditioned for the "Why is the Sky Blue?" challenge and made it into the final piece. You can see how he evolved by checking my work in progress page. For a look at some of my more traditional quilts, click your way to the gallery. The biography page is new, and includes exhibition credits.

The Wind God

The Wind God is a supersized postcard that I intended to use as a stitching test for "Outside the Box." Somewhere along the line it came into its own - I never did test the stitches!

Ecliptic VIII: She Rules the Night

2006

When you start a quilt, It's hard to know what's going to happen. I began Ecliptic VIII shortly after taking Carol Taylor's "Architextures" class, intending to combine the couched circle technique with hand-painted fabric and my eclipsing sun designs. As I was working, it became obvious that the image wanted to be vertical, rather than horizontal, and when I turned it, the sunset sky took on a suggestion of the female form.

To the Light

To The Light

2006

This piece was a true pleasure to create. The figures had previously auditioned for another quilt, but found that they belonged here, taking a leap of faith and inspiration.

Embryonic Series?

2006

It's still too early to tell if this will end up as a series, but one small quilt is ready for binding, a larger one is on the table, the big one's on the wall, and two postcards are done. Perhaps a mini-series? These pieces grew out of a circle workshop with Carol Taylor and took on a life of their own. So far, they've all been based around a single fabric that forms the center cell(s) of the embryo. The postcard shown here incorporates a layer of angelina fibers in various shades of green.

Ecliptic I

Sunday Morning with Rubbernecker

2005

The full quilt will be displayed on www.quiltart.com, so I'm only posting the detail shot here. The piece was a totally whimsical response to "Why is the Sky Blue?" I'm not sure whether it supports or contradicts the basic assumption - that the sky IS blue. You'll have to decide for yourself!

Maple Flowers #3

A couple years ago, as I was waiting for fall to arrive, I became obsessed with the maple leaf shape and collected and traced several varieties of maple leaves. This resulted in several fantasy-flower compositions where the maple became a floral element.
