Work in Progress

Projects in the works always seem rougher, uglier, less organized. Certainly, the photographs are less refined than the carefully tailored pictures of finished art. Nevertheless, we're not only here to show beautiful accomplishments. The creative process, with all of its false starts and missed targets is important and needs to be captured.

And remember - this page exists in "quilt time" so that some projects may make it to the gallery quickly and others may slowly evolve over the course of years.

Embryonic II: ReplicationEmbryonic II: Replication

One of the postcards I made with the "Embryonic" theme looked like it would be a fun idea for a larger quilt.

Rubberneckers
In 2004 I planned to enter the Lonni Rossi/Andover Typospheres challenge. The large circles in the Typospheres panels suggested faces, and I designed a series of "rubberneckers" all agape. I envisioned several possible settings, but after working with one for a while, it was evident that I had at least two different quilts battling it out.

As of summer 2005, I have plans to use one of the rubberneckers in a challenge quilt. We'll see how that develops and track the progress this fall. The other three will eventually be in a quilt of their own. Although the concept is pretty solid at this point, there are a number of other quilts that will come first.

Here are photos of a couple of the rubberneckers in the early stages of construction.

Floral Scenes?

Playing with thread can be a tremendous amount of fun. In September 2005, I came home on a Friday and decided to spend the afternoon free-motion stitching on a piece of fabric. Of course along the way, a couple other fabrics came out and the fusing began. And as long as I was playing, I figured I'd pull out the Angelina fibers...

Here's a cross-section of the results. Beads are yet to come...

Ecliptic Series

The Ecliptic Series is a set of quilts that I began in the spring of 2004. The concept grew out of the circle play that started with the Typospheres projects with inspiration from some of my favorite music. In the ecliptic series, you may see circular shapes eclipsing each other. In several of the designs there is an ecliptic path crossing the quilt. In Ecliptic I: Last Night the Sky Was Filled with Light, the path appears as cracks in the firmament of the night sky.

Pictured here is a detail from Ecliptic V: Binario that depicts a binary star cluster separated by a rift in the firmament. It was completed in time to be accepted into Quilter's Heritage Celebration 2006. In early May I began to paint and print the fabric for Ecliptic III which was conceived in 2004 and is finally beginning to emerge.
