Deer Sighting

deer1.jpg

June guest Candace spotted this young buck on her last morning at the lodge and bagged this photo. So far, we only seem to spot the woodpeckers and hawks.  One would think that it would be easy to spot lots of wildlife here but it is difficult.

Spring has arrived at Acorn Lodge: birds are gathering, bulbs are coming up in the front garden, trees are beginning to bud and blossom, and I am enjoying a beautiful view from the deck. We have had some interesting weather this weekend, shifting from warm and sunny to rainy and cool in the course of an hour.  I read that the Northern Virginia Hiking Club has been working on the trails last weekend. I can’t wait to go hiking.

This was a quick visit this weekend. I came here by myself to get a few chores done and to get the lodge ready for the April guests. We had a houseful of friends last weekend; it’s really fun to fill the table with friends and good conversation. One of these days though, I will learn to relax and not work while I am supposed to be taking a break.  I did manage to get a great massage at the resort spa. It was an hour of bliss and I finally was able to get the work week out of my muscles.  A tour of our hot tub/spa later that evening knocked me out completely. Whew-I do love those snippets of relaxation!

Skiing is Happening at Massanutten

I have managed to combine the monthly check-up on the lodge with a couple days of actually relaxing and having a bit of fun.  It was a beautiful sunny day yesterday and we were able to get in a few hours of skiing.  I was pleasantly surprised. The slopes weren’t bad at all: short but not bad and perfect for the first day of skiing after a long period of not putting on skis. The spa was really nice and soothing for my knees.  We had a dusting of snow during the night but it was not enough to provide a nice base of snow over the icy artificial snow that the resort has been making.

The lodge is as nice as ever and there was only one minor object fatality during the past month-one snooker cue-so we were fortunate.  Hundreds of hawks have been circling the resort grounds. We think they must be mating or else a huge animal has died and the birds are enjoying the biggest buffet of their lives.  While we were riding on the lifts, we spotted a beautiful red-headed wood pecker. Normally, they are nearer the lodge but I guess with the hawk frenzy in this part of the resort changed Woody’s mind.  I hope to be able to get back to the lodge in March and I’ll blog about the upcoming spring and new bulbs we planted last year.  Even with our cold spell, it looks  like an early spring in Northern Virginia.

Ready for Ski Season

Although there isn’t snow on the ground, Massanutten resort is managing to keep the snow machines going and the slopes and tubing full of snow and ready for down-hill adventure.  The holiday decorations are down and now we are ready for ski season.  January weekends are now fully booked and February is beginning to fill up.  The guests have been wonderful and seemed to have enjoyed the lodge as much as we do.

On the not-so-good side, I have stopped providing DVDs as the new ones I just bought have been “borrowed” and I just don’t see replacing them again. I am sorry that one bad turn spoils it for the rest.  The up side though is that all of the VHS tapes are still available for the kids. Thank goodness the old technologies are unappealing now. The TV has been mounted in the lower level bedroom so the kids can watch movies until the cows come home.

Parts of the “red-neck golfing” game were destroyed by a guest’s pet so the game is not available either.  No note was left so I have no idea which pet tried to be a red-neck golfer.  Oh well, I guess that’s life in the vacation rental world…I live and learn everyday and enjoy the time I do get to spend at the lodge.

Ready for the Holidays

Well, the tree is up; the table is festive, and the lodge is ready for the holidays. When I was hanging the new TV on the wall and putting things in place after the theft, I wanted to take a break and watch a movie. Well, it seems that the thieves also took the DVDs and the knife set attached to the kitchen cabinet. Very odd these people. Well, I there are two DVDs I bought and one without a cover that I think someone left. If you are the family that is missing the DVD, email me and let me know the title and I will send it back to you.  Anyway, the lodge is still relaxing and I will be going there the weekend before Christmas to relax myself and ensure it is ready for fun and enjoyment.
