May's Choice
The Nine: Inside the Secret
World of the Supreme Court by Jeffery Toobin
Ten members participated to discuss The Nine, Nancy Savage,
Marge Kennedy, Jean Foley, Mary Ann Ashton, Phyllis Meade, Loretta Roscoe, Sue Appel, Donna Beusch, Suzanne Shanahan, Kay
Steeves.
All really enjoyed the book and were glad they had read
it.
People seemed to enjoy getting to "know" the justices
on a more personal level through the book. Most were dismayed at how political the Court appears to be, when many thought
(or idealistically hoped!) that it was somehow above the fray of politics. That each individual appointed to interpret the
Constitution could be so varied in that interpretation is perplexing. There was lots of discussion on the Federalists
movement, the concept of originalism, the power of the President to change the nation by his/her selection.
(Summary, Nancy Savage)
Note: Other Attendees or members who would
like can continue on line, please add your impressions of the meeting!
For our next meeting Tuesday, June 24th, the selection is:

Thank you all
for,
participating
in the inaugural meeting of the group!
I think it was a very enthusiastic start for what
I hope will continue as an engaging activity for our league. Most of the group enjoyed the book for its inspiring
characters and insight into a culture with which most of us felt unfamiliar.
Any member may add their own personal comments.

The League of Women Voters has been working for over 80 years. It was then,
and is now, a nonpartisan organization. League founders believed that maintaining a nonpartisan stance would protect the fledgling
organization from becoming mired in the party politics of the day. However, League members were encouraged to be political
themselves, by educating citizens about, and lobbying for, government and social reform legislation.
This holds true
today. The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level
of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public. The League has a long, rich history, that
continues with each passing year. Join Us! Contact Acton Area Membership: nancy@allthesavages.com
