How to Help

Thank you for your interest in getting involved with our Childhood Stroke Awareness Campaign.  Helping to spread the word is what this is all about and you are a big part of the movement.  Below you will find some helpful ideas on how YOU can help raise awareness in your community about "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day", which takes place on the first Saturday in May each year.  Events can be held at any time of year, it is up to you.  If you come up with an idea you’d like to share, please let us know so we can pass it on or include it in next year’s packet.

  • Get a proclamation by your council/mayor/governor declaring the first Saturday in May as "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day"  If you'd like to get a proclamation from your elected officials please visit our CSAD Proclamation Project page.
  • Send a press release about "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" to your local paper or write your own letter to the editor
  • Ask the library, school, community building or local store if you can set up a display or bulletin board giving information on pediatric stroke. (You may reproduce our fact sheet for information and use as a handout.) You can include old braces or therapy aids, pictures, contact information for CHASA, Kids Have Strokes.org, American Heart Association, and UCP etc….)
  • Have a neighborhood festival or fair to raise disability awareness. (Ask children to perform games one-handed, blindfolded, etc; small novelty prizes will add to the fun.)  Check with your local Chamber of Commerce or Disability Commission to see if there are fairs or festivals already scheduled that you may be able to participate in.
  • Organize a Mini-Thon to coincide with "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day"
  • Send our Fact Sheet and information or the press release on "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" to local doctors, therapists, early intervention centers, American Heart Association, Easter Seals, United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) and other local branches of health organizations.
  • Purchase and utilize (or give away) "Kids Have Strokes" products to help get the word out, i.e. Kids Have Strokes Ribbons, Kids Have Strokes wristbands and more.  Check out the Official Kids Have Strokes Store for official "Kids Have Strokes" products at www.cafepress.com/KidsHaveStrokesContact us at childhoodstrokeawareness@live.com to see if other products are available or to make a suggestion on products you'd like to see.
  • Speak to the media or local groups about pediatric stroke and the Childhood Stroke Awareness Campaign.  Visit the Contacting your Legislators & the Media Page to get contact information for local media outlets.
  • Make a donation to the CHASA Pediatric Stroke Research fund by visiting www.chasa.org
