New Horizons is an innovative music program for senior adults who wish to learn to play a concert band instrument and play
in a band. It also encourages adults to unpack and dust off those old horns that got put aside so many years ago to raise
a family and have a career.
Our History
The first New Horizons Band was formed in 1991 by Professor Roy Ernst of the Universty of Rochester’s Eastman School
of Music. The first band started with 10 members, and within 5 years had grown to over 100 members. There are now over 150
New Horizons Bands, Orchestras and Choruses across North America, located in 37 states and 4 provinces of Canada. New Horizons
Bands provide an entry point for adults who have not previously had musical instrument training, or who put their instruments
aside for many years. Annual New Horizons music camps, including ones in Ithaca and Chautauqua, New York welcome New Horizons
members from near and far.
