The Op Ed piece by Tom Sgouras arguing against the Charter schools in general and the newly approved Mayoral Academies
specifically, should bring a vigorous response from all parents of public school children and taxpayers.
Between his sarcastic and mostly sophomoric comments, we can discern that his real concern is not for the children who
could benefit. It is not for the overburdened taxpayers who would at last see results they could be proud of in exchange for
their hard earned money. It is certainly not for the public school system for his only suggestion to the public is that they
have not paid enough money. It is not even for the public school teachers behind whom he hides in order to lend credence to
his stone-throwing. His real concern is for the teachers unions.
When the day comes that these unions call for job actions because of the administrative rules that hinder them from doing
their jobs, picket for better textbooks, or threaten to work a longer year to help children overcome outdated lab equipment
and overwhelmed councilors, they will have overwhelming support from the general public and their voices would be multiplied
ten-thousand times.
But in the meantime, the taxpayers have ponied up increasing sums every year and have not received an adequate return on
their investment. By enabling more charter schools to be formed, we provide more students with the opportunity to truly become
equipped with the skills that they need to prosper in the world. Isn't that the real goal of our schools?
