Thursday, April 30th at 6:30pm, North Kingstown Free Library, Wildflowers of the Hunt River Watershed

Saturday May 2nd at 9:00am, Frenchtown Park, East Greenwich, Watershed Walk

The Friends of the Hunt River Watershed are proud to announce a free slide presentation by its President , Barry Martasian at the North Kingstown Free Library on Thursday, April 30th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. His topic will be ‘Wildflowers of the Hunt River Watershed’ Mr. Martasian has spent many hours over the past three years documenting the flora, fauna and tributaries of the Hunt River Watershed as its waters meanders their way from East Greenwich and North Kingstown to the Narragansett Bay and has photographed the wildflowers he has discovers growing there. His talk will be followed on Saturday, May 2nd by a watershed walk at Frenchtown Park in East Greenwich to which attendees are also invited. The site of the walk will be along the Frenchtown Brook a tributary of the Hunt River. The site contains the ruins of the 19th century textile mill, its millpond, dam and spillway. The inhabitants of the old mill village once grew flowers around their houses, with patches of lilies of the valley, day lilies and periwinkle still surviving near the house foundations. The walk will begin at 9:00am. For questions please call Mr. Martasian at 338-4072 or Harriet Powell at 294-4737.

Hunt River Paddle/Davis Memorial Wildlife Refuge, Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th 2009

Friends of the Hunt River Watershed and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island welcome you to this beautiful wildlife refuge. Come explore this little known river that is in the heart of Rhode Island. Once used to power mills at several locations, the Hunt River is now the home of beaver and other wildlife. This is an easy flat water paddle for both the novice and experienced paddler. Because the number of boats during the event will be limited we are offering the same paddle on two different dates. Meet at the parking lot of the refuge on Davisville Road on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. or at 3 p.m. Sunday for an afternoon paddle. This event is free but donations to the Friends of the Hunt River Watershed would be appreciated. Sponsored by Friends of the Hunt River Watershed. You must sign up for this event before the day of the paddle. Contact Barry Martasian, 401.338.4072 or bmar1865@verizon.net. Note: Recent construction has changed access to Davisville Road from Route 4 South at Exit 7. Use Exit 7A to Frenchtown Road. At the end of the ramp, take a right. At next light, take a right onto Davisville Road.
