Troop Committee Meeting for May (Held on April 26th)

To all Scout Parents,

This is to remind you that the Troop has a Troop Committee Meeting on Sunday, April 26th at 7:30 PM at the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. We will meet on the 2nd floor in the Cascade Room. The ability of the troop to continue to have an interesting and active program depends on the willingness of the parents and other adults associated with the troop to support the program. The committee meeting is where this all starts.

Please plan to make time to attend and help with our program requirements.

Medical Forms

I now have the information to insure that you have your medical forms properly filled out for this year:

· If you are getting a new physical exam by your doctor this year use the new medical form. Do not use any of the older forms. The medical form is available on our Troop Website. You may also download it as an electronic file, type in most of the personal information, then print it out to take to the Doctor. All parts of the form must be filled out. Parts A, B, and C. Please make sure the scout and parent signs at the end of Part C.

· If you are planning to use the physical exam from a previous year, it must be dated no earlier than August 2006 AND you must fill out Parts A & C of the new form. This is the last year in which you may use the previous physical exam. In the future all scouts must get an annual exam.

· Everyone must submit a copy of your insurance card (front and back). If you do not have medical insurance please note that at the bottom of Part C.

· Adults are expected to get a new physical this year.

· Please make sure that you fill out the Medical History and Immunization information. Attaching the scouts immunization record as another attachment is not preferred.

Your help in promptly addressing the medical exam issue would be very much appreciated. There are many new requirements summer camp registration and merit badge sign ups that it will be very difficult for me to insure that everything is done correctly if I have to spend hours calling each family to get the correct information.

I will be checking the dates of all of the physical exams that I have in my records and will be emailing those scouts that have expired exams or that I do not have any information on to remind them that they MUST get a new exam in the next couple of days.

If you have any questions, please call.

Two Service Projects this Weekend

This is to remind you that we have two service projects to do this Saturday.

· Scouting for Food Please meet at the Church at 8:00 AM to hand out the plastic bags to every home in Forest Hills. With the economy being in such a bad way, the demands on the local food bank is tremendous. We need to do everything we can to try and collect more food this year.

· Forest Hills Parks Service Project After we complete the hand out of the bags, we will need to change clothes, eat lunch and spend the afternoon cleaning up the main park and cutting back the trails. Please bring rakes, shovels, gloves and shears with you. IF ANYONE HAS A WHEEL BARREL OR SMALL CART THAT WE CAN USE TO MOVE MULCH, PLEASE BRING THEM ALONG AS WELL.

Cancel "Shake Out" Bike Ride for Dragons Tonight
Folks, I announced at the troop meeting tuesday night that I would meet the dragons at the Jail Trail Friday evening at 6:30 to have them take "shake out" ride.  However, there is a home playoff hockey game and a home baseball game that evening.  I believe traffic will be a nightmare.  Can you get let the troop know that the outing is being postponed?

Troop Meeting on April 14

This is just a reminder to all scouts that you should plan on bringing your bikes to the meeting again. We plan to work on how to change a tire as well as take care of your bike. Bring the tools needed to change a tire and your spare intertube if you have it. There were some bikes that needed some repairs and adjustments and we plan to do as many as possible this evening. If everyone cooperates we should have fewer problems on the bike ride in a couple of weeks.

In addition to the meeting on the 14th, we have the 1st weekend of the Scouting for Food Service Project this coming Saturday, April 18th followed in the afternoon with our community service project of starting to maintain the trails in the Forest Hills Parks. The Parks service project will start as soon as we finish delivering the bags to the homes in Forest Hills. Plan to return to the church, change clothes, have lunch (the Troop will supply) and spend the afternoon working on the trails. If you can bring, clippers, shovels, etc that would be very useful.

The following weekend we pick up the food and then also spend the afternoon finishing up the trail work.

If you have not brought in your permission slips for these two activities please do so this coming meeting.

This is also the last opportunity to sign up for summer camp and still get the early-bird discount. Please bring in the applications on Tuesday.

Eagle Scouts of Pittsburgh (video)

Several Years ago, On Q, the WQED TV report featured Eagle Scouts of Pittsburgh, what it takes to get to the Eagle Rank and in doing so featured Troop 90. I though that it might be interesting to both scouts and parents.

Bring Bike to Tonight's Meeting

This is to remind you to bring you bike to the meeting so we can make sure that the bike can be used on the bike trip and to make sure that it is properly adjusted for a bike trip. We will also do some practice riding in the parking lot.

Also everyone should try and return the tents that they have checked out either this past weekend or on other outings. The tents should be dry and swept clean.

Forest Hills Service Project

This year we have tried to combine the Scouting for Food drive in the mornings and then to work the Forest Hills Service Project in the afternoon. We will then evaluate if this is the best way to schedule the Forest Hills service project or if we will need to set aside another weekend. In any event, we have scheduled two afternoons.

IF WE ARE UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE WORK REQUIRED ON THIS TWO HALF DAYS WE WILL HAVE TO SCHEDULE ADDITIONAL TIMES TO WORK ON THE TRAILS. THE MORE SCOUTS WE HAVE THE LESS TIME WE HAVE TO SCHEDULE.

Cell Phones on Campouts
I have announced this twice at the past two troop meetings but I want to make sure this information gets home to those scouts and parents that have not been at the meetings.

Due to the inappropriate use of cell phones on the last campout we will not be allowing any of the scouts to take their cell phones on our monthly troop campouts. The cell phones are to be left at home. Most, if not all, of the adults that are along on a troop campout will have a cell phone and a scout may request to uses these phones if it becomes necessary for a scout to contact his parent or guardian or make any other phone call.

If a scout is found with a cell phone we will call the parent and have the parent drive to our campsite to pick up their son. It would be to everyones benefit if the scout obeys this rule and the parent makes sure he has left any cell phone (his or others) at home for the weekend.

If you have any questions concerning this policy please contact Jack Russell.
