Julian Christopher Gnam was born in 1984, and grew up in the suburbs and rural areas of northern Virginia. Commuting an hour to private school every day, and commuting an hour between his divorced parents' homes during the weekends, Julian spent a good deal of his childhood riding in the car, staring out the window at the passing countryside and pondering life.
When he started class at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 he thought he would eventually go on to illustrate for videogames or sci-fi movies. However, by his junior year he realized what he really enjoyed painting was the kinds of scenes he saw in Virginia throughout his childhood. At that point he took a semester off to return home and paint on his own in Virginia through the spring and summer of 2005. Upon resuming class at RISD he continued developing his landscape painting and graduated with a BFA in Illustration in 2007.
Julian is currently back in Virginia, working part time for a publishing company in Herndon, while continueing to paint scenes of the Northern Virginia countryside in his free time. He is also looking for anyone interested in buying, selling, or showing his work.
