ASLAN ACADEMY

Aslan Academy's purpose is for the members to
encourage and support one another in our endeavors
to educate our children at home with the cooperative
effort of a small group.

We are a private Christian school that files a yearly affidavit with the state on behalf of twenty families; the independent study program allows parents to determine the curriculum, goals and timing of their children's education.

ACTIVITIES
Park Days:  All Fridays except the third Fridays of the month - from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.  Throughout the year we have structured activities each month such as a CRAFT DAYS, SPORTS DAYS and a LEARN-N-SHARE DAYS.  These may vary as we attempt to meet the changing needs of the group.  We try to keep things central, but our park days are spread out: as far away as the 405 in Costa Mesa (Tewinkle), in Fountain Valley (Mile Square), off of Valley View (Eastgate), one in Los Alamitos (Rossmoor) and one in Westminster (Bolsa Chica) as well as some others in Garden Grove.  In September and May, weather permitting, we may go to the beach instead of a park.

Minstry Days: Planned by volunteers on the 3rd Friday of the month.  Sometimes, given the ministry activity, we may meet at the park or we may meet on another day in the month.  Some ministries we have done in the past years: Garden Grove Convalescent Hospital, Summersville (assisted senior living), Dorcus Ministries, Second Harvest Food Bank gleaning, and Operation Christmas Child.

Jr/Sr High Quarterly Fellowship / Activities: Planned by volunteers. In addition to the quarterly fellowship, for the coming 2005-2006 school year we will be adding monthly get-togethers for the Jr/Sr Highers. Since many Jr/Sr Highers tend to lose interest in park days, we will also be trying to, on at least on Friday a month, have a supplemental activity for that age group (bowling, movie, shopping, etc).

Mom's Morning Out:  8:00-9:30 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday each month.  This time is intended for building one another up in the LORD and gaining encouragement in our home education efforts.  This is also a time to discuss business and voting when needed.

Monthly Field Trips are paid individually as needed; we do not collect a monthly tuition.

Other Activites: Aslan has other activities that we do throughout the school year. These include: school photos, a promotion ceremony in June where certificates are awarded, and the occasional quarterly school-wide activity, such as, open house, faculty appreciation night, potlucks/BBQ’s and game nights.  Open house usually has a theme such as hobbies, science fair, school projects, etc.  Extended family and friends are encouraged to participate in our open house and promotion ceremony.

REGISTRATION
There are two types of registration for Aslan Academy.  You may join Aslan as an enrolled member, in which case we keep your child(ren)’s records, or you may join Aslan as an associate member, which entitles you to all benefits of Aslan, but you are responsible for keeping your child(ren)’s records -- your chid(ren) will not be included on our affidavit.

Yearly open enrollment is March though May.  The registration fee for a new enrollment is $50 per family.  The yearly re-registration fee after that is $30 per family..  The fee pays for donations, newsletters, copies, supplies, stamps and our post office box.  Once approval has been determined, all record keeping items and forms must be received on the dates due or registration will be null and void.   Because we operate in a co-op style, everyone is expected to follow through with what they agree to.  The registration fee is not refundable once your application has been approved, as we feel it is your responsibility to carefully and prayerfully research and select the ISP that most meets your family’s needs.

Belonging to a private school ISP does not guarantee safety from public school officials.  Aslan Academy cannot defend you in a court of law.  For this reason, if you are a member, membership with Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is mandatory ($85 with a CHEA membership, $100 non-members). For more information on HSLDA, visit their web site at: http://www.hslda.org.

We do not accept registration for associate membership if you belong to charter schools or have any public school affilication.

RECORD KEEPING
A private school has the responsibility to assess the progress and achievement of its students. For this purpose the following paperwork is maintained by the school.

Family/school file includes: registration form, HSLDA membership information, and teacher qualifications.

Student file includes: health records (school entry and immunizations/or waivers), yearly proposed course of studies, and yearly attendance for all grades.

Assessment test results are required near the completion of 6th, 8 or 9th, and 12th year level work.  It is the parent's choice of which assessment test to use. Results need to be submitted to the administrator before May 31st. Jr/Sr high grades submit semester grades and elementary grades submit a year end evaluation.

The parent maintains course descriptions for secondary students (7-12). If Aslan Academy is requested to provide a transcript or diploma then additional information needs to be submitted for consideration of either.

We highly recommend that you keep inclusive evidence of instruction such as: course descriptions, lesson plans, journals, outlines, goals and samples of student work - whatever you use to show
evidence
of instruction.

INVOLVEMENT
Enrolled members are required to attend two mandatory meetings a year: August Mom's Morning Out and May Mom's Morning Out. Both of these meetings are from 8am - 10am on the third Saturday of the month.  The fee for missing these meetings it $25.00 per meeting.  If you miss both meetings in a year, your re-registration may be denied the following year.

Because we are a small group we encourage high participation, however, members are only required to attend two events quarterly and volunteer for a required sign-up.  Current required sign-up’s include: planning and facilitating a craft, a sports day, a ministry activity, a field trip, or a (single) quarterly junior/senior high fellowship activity.  Mom’s Mornings Out do not count toward your required attendance.

There are also several other opportunities available during the year to support our group.  Members can volunteer to sign up for needs such as purchasing school T-shirts, scheduling school photos, planning our  promotion ceremony, hosting a monthly Mom's Morning Out, producing a yearbook, compiling & publishing student newsletter, collecting mail, publishing a monthly calendar, assist in planning an occasional quarterly school-wide activity, and administrator.
