The week's bulletin announcements...

Experience “the Works” Sundays as the Rev. Cathy Gray nurtures our new Christian Formation program for children Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM in the education rooms upstairs from the Chase Room. Cathy and her crew are ready to receive children beginning at 9:45, so parents can bring them right to the classroom upstairs on their way to the 10:00 service. The children will be in the service in time for Communion. All kids, whether parishioners or not, are welcome, and any “tall people” who would like to help are also encouraged to participcate

The St. Matthias Choir is open to all and practices Thursdays at 8:00 PM. Everyone is encouraged to join this talented, fun and faithful group. Talk with Don Brown, organist/choir master, or any choir member for more information.

Survey results are in. Some people at St. Matthias may remember extensive surveys we took and interviews we gave for a national study on how community service and outreach affects the spirituality of individuals and of a congregation. The results of that study have just been released in the form of "Service and Faith: The Impact on Christian Faith and Congregational Life of Organized Community Caring." Funded by Lilly Endowment, the project was led by the Center for Family and Community Ministries of the Baylor School of Social Work with research partners from Whittier College (California), Calvin College (Michigan) and the University of South Carolina. You can read the findings of the study athttp://www.family-ministry.org/ServiceFaith/ServiceFaith.html"

Children and Family Services can use our help by our donating items such as stuffed animals, crayons, coloring books, drawing paper, arts and crafts supplies, children clothing, baby blankets, toys, and books. They especially right now need toys for boys. You can drop your donations at the church office and we will get them to the county social workers. As always, the Child Protection Hotline is 800 540-4000 if you are aware of a child who is need of protection from abuse or neglect.

Judith Stockman, our Parish Nurse is at St. Matthias one Sunday a month and to take blood pressures and discuss any health questions you may have. She is with us through a grant from the Parsons Foundation, and is always available for home visits and phone consultations as well as her Sunday morning sessions. She is also at St. Matthias Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 4 for drop in visits with parishioners and to work with our Soup Hour guests.

Sunday Morning Adult Class continues Sundays from 9:00 AM to 9:50 AM with Dave Donavon leading a study of the Gospel of Mark. All adults are welcome and childcare is available.

Holy Baptism is available to everyone who desires this foundational sacrament.  Please talk with Bruce or contact the church office if you are interested or otherwise have any questions.

You Have A Buddy on the Vestry. Bruce organized the new Vestry Buddy system for St. Matthias so that every parishioner has a particular Vestry member who is supposed to be a contact for any questions or needs. If you have not heard from your Vestry buddy, perhaps your information is missing from the parish roles. Please contact the parish office or Bruce if you have not been contacted.

St. Matthias Office Hours

The Thanksgiving Day Dinner will once again be on Thanksgiving Day from noon until 1:30 PM. All members of the community are invited to this free, sit down, full service meal with all the fixin's. St. Matthias has offered this Thanksgiving Day event for over twenty years, and typically serves around 800 meals. All the work is done by volunteers, and Dave Donovan will have a table set up after each Sunday service for signups if you can volunteer to donate time, food, or money for the dinner. During the week the office can be contacted to sign-up or to offer more information.

Christmas Stockings for Soldiers. For the second year, St. Matthias will be sending stockings full of small gifts to soldiers in Iraq. Suggested items include hygiene items, CDs and DVDs, small games, and even small toys that can be given to local children. All items must be at the church by November 30th for mailing. See Kay Lozano for more information.

Kirkin of the Tartans will take place at the end of the 10:00 service on November 30th Wear your family or professional tartan, or carry a swatch of it, for this joyous time. The Black Watch Honor Guard will be providing the authentic atmosphere and music.

The Women's Book Group will be reading for December The Handmaid and the Carpenter, by Elizabeth Berg. This is a novel about Mary and Joseph as their life might have been. See Nancy Jenkins or Kay Lozano if you want this book ordered for you. The cost is $10, and the group will meet December 2nd at 2:00 PM.

The St. Matthias Alternative Christmas Gift opportunity is available until Christmas so that you can make donations to the Soup Hour Ministry in the name of someone on your Christmas shopping list. All donations go to support the St. Matthias programs to help the poor, including the Soup Hour, Cold Weather Shelter, and the Community Nurse programs. Alternative Christmas donations can be made after church each Sunday or weekdays in the office.

Model Railroaders continue to meet Tuesday evening.  Help us prepare the room so we can begin layout construction.  See Fred Torres or contact the church office for more information.

Finding Christ in our Culture: Study and Prayer” This discussion, led by Nancy Jenkins, continues monthly on the second  Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Chapel.

Operation Paperback  Ten boxes of gently used paperbacks from our book sale have been sent to men and women in our Armed Forces. Their names are listed after Please pray for...all in the Military on the back of the bulletin. There are small libraries all over Iraq and Afghanistan, and paperbacks can be easily transported when troops are deployed to another location. If you would like to help to pay for more shipments, mark your donations “for the troops.” If you would like further information, please contact Carol McCracken or go to www.operationpaperback.org.

Wednesday Morning Holy Eucharist and Bible Study meet weekly. The Eucharist is at 9:00 AM and the Bible Study begins at 9:30 AM. The Bible Study Bruce leads and focuses on the readings assigned for the coming Sunday. Everyone is welcomed to attend either activity, regardless of prior experience!

Soup Hour needs canned meats and canned tomatoes (please no tomato sauces or paste) as well as canned fruit. Donations may be brought to the church Sunday mornings or during parish office hours.

Parish Birthday Cards

Bruce tries to send a birthday card every year to each parishioner, and we also like to list the parish birthdays in the bulletin to be remembered in everyone’s prayers. If you do not receive a card, it means we do not have your birthdate in the parish records. Simply use one of the Newcomer Cards on a Sunday morning or email Bruce (brucewgray@yahoo.com) if you would like to add your or a family member’s birthday to the parish database.
