CONCLUSIONS
It is risky to extrapolate
any of these measurements beyond the specific transceiver model and may
even be so between different units. I suspect however, that the
measurements will translate between different units of
the same model pretty well. The KWM-2A performance frankly was a
pleasant surprise and the other two was rather disappointing while still
providing adequate performance at a somewhat lower power level.
What is clear is that the intermodulation levels rise rapidly (no surprise)
and the operator should not press the issue too hard (also no
surprise). In particular the FT-1000MP performance seemed less than
the "cost level" would suggest. The silver lining , if
there is one, is that low operating power levels as suggested by these
measurements are adequate for this mode, Certainly if the results are
valid (and I believe them to be) then some interesting questions
arise. Among these are:
- What is root cause of difference in
performance?
- Will all tube rigs do better?
- Is transmitter filtering causing a
significant difference?
- What is causing the widening of the spectrum
in the FT-1000MP? PLL perturbations?
With these and other questions that will present themselves the
measurements are surely a work in process and this document will be updated
as new measurements are made. I intend to measure performance prior
to final amplification where output is available (e.g. transverter ports
which the FT-1000MP and the KWM-2A provide) and the results will be added
to the document as available
