Andreas was drafted into the Prussian army and served his term. When he returned to Pettstadt, his future seemed particularly bleak. Employment was hard to find, and he was subject to being recalled into the military for the next ten years. As the third son, he was not in line to receive the family home if and when he married, and without evidence that he properly support a wife and family, he would not be permitted to marry should the opportunity arise. It is little wonder, then, that the young man decided to seek his fortune in the fabled, distant land of America.
