This view is from inside "the cut" looking toward Vintondale. The "cut" was blasted through with explosives and excavated in the late 1800's for a shorter railroad route to Vintondale, instead of following the course of the creek around the big bend. On each side there are massive sandstone rocks, seen in the upper left of the photo, and underlain by a seam of coal.
