Inventions corner (the now and future of vehicles)

Since we lost all of our 99999s, driving has taken a new dimension.  Here's some of my car blogging -- meant for the HURRICANE CTR, to be a treatise on car maintenance.  Instead, it presents itself here, on the occassion of futuristic programs recently on TV.

Growing up, we had Boynton (pre-dating Gary Larson - FARSIDE) on mugs.  Now we have green cars.  Can you drive inside a mug?

Not to place aside the subject of Automobiles AND Insurance;  these industries are inevitably tied TOGETHER.  Safety is a highly rated ISSUE.  Comfort and style rank a close second, if not the first.  Is it so easy to give up, Old Reliable?  Should you?

Huge changes in car-line designs, its evolution (the engine propelling the vehicle), are a new factor pushing folks to buy new model/drastically redesigned vehicles.   There is a green movement towards higher fuel efficiency vehicles, and those that are able to accept alternative, including non-CO2 emitting vehicles (this last, will have to addressed in a separate excerpt.  IT DEMANDS ATTENTION WHEN EMITTING CO2 is a crime, yet inevitable of any carbon combustion, including human metabolism.  There are a lot of rocketeers, amongst us, it seems.)     No wonder some (see Front page right-bottom column article link) are conceiving of flying cars!!!

The 2006-7 cars, lighter than ever, and now able to take ethanol (> 10%) for fuel – APPEAR to fly down the road.  The new designs suggested, would further lighten the load.  How's it possible?  Those in wintery climates, and not fans of computer-tracked vehicles (automobiles as OMNIBUSES on rails), would be skeptical.  Golf cars are too light to be taken to high speed, and a rotating navigation center simulates a vehicle with ARTILLERY.  Take aim and shoot is not my idea of a vehicle, nor are vehicles armed with visible steel reinforcements and ALL-blackened windows.  This armored private world, belongs only in a high-powered city, in the banking centers and perhaps at the airports; else, why so impenetrable, a driving FORTRESS? [Perhaps some have had bad accidents.  So, below, I list some factors that are high contributors towards accidents on the road.]

Back to rescue vehicles!  Mid last year, there was a broadcast advertising the concept of a Honda Air taxi.  It seems there is niche for a mid-air rescue vehicle.  What about parachutes for stabilizing the wings?  Or a separately-powered booster [(EMERGENCY-operated)] only engine?

Without a doubt, Honda has had much success, in designing vehicles with high fuel efficiency.  Even some Saturn models, such as my 1995 model, have had Honda engines as part of the design.  Indeed it was difficult to justify buying a new car, when 2001 came rolling around because of my 120 mile per weekday daily commute, and the fact that my mpg was regularly around 32 miles per gallon.  So instead, some improvements to the clutch(plates) and tires permitted an even further improvement of gasoline mileage to 35-37 mpg, even after 220k miles had been reached.  It was a series of odd accidents in 2004, that pushed for a new vehicle.  After renting almost every new vehicle on the market, including the greenest HONDA INSIGHT (the Saturn electric vehicle, no longer being available), I decided a Mustang would do.  I ended up with a 2000 model, which I was very comfortable driving.  The 2004 Jetta/Passat were considered, but it was the front dash panel that disturbed the eyes.  The Saturn VUE would not pick up, a defamation of the very safe SL model.

What I did learn the hard way, was that the evolutionary line of the auto body, can really cause accidents.  Unless attended by a new house, and new (personal) company, it can be very dangerous.  Think about what automobile company you and your family have supported.  If this still does not yield an answer, try car-pooling it (or biofueling IT -- the ultimate method being your own TWO LEGS).  A sudden change in design has its own vagaries.  At this writing, I’ve decided the next step, would be to go diesel.  Ethanol accepting vehicles, if not jets to-be, emulate a bullet train.  Great for getting in and out of a big city, for the pollution controls intrinsic to the engine design, but not for x-country-ing it.  If you have a regular long-distance driving requirement on your vehicle, and can only afford to own ONE, Go DIESEL!  Or, take the bus.  Many alternative engine designs are being tested on municipal transportation (e.g., CNG*) – large buses and economy vans, and these will even out the kinks, until portability is ready-to-go!

Warnings that an accident is headed your way:

Problems with your insurance agency.  They are changing their policy.  You don’t understand it.  Or, you’ve been told to report to a different office, you don’t understand it.   Consider a new insurance company, but never insure with a company that openly criticizes your DRIVING ABILITYThat's your first wreck.

Too many tickets for trivial reasons sometimes.  If you have been taking well care of your vehicle, and a new car has not already been suggested, this means, you ought to MOVE. {This is contrary to good advice about investments.}

Overwhelming job/family stress.  Not driving might improve the situation! even while not worsening it.

THE CAR DIDN'T GET FIXED THE WAY YOU WANTED IT.  If you wanted original manufacturer parts, you must say so.  Don't ever assume, discuss it!

You keep getting lost.  This is sometimes because of long duration road repairs, and construction.  Or, there are a few new people to town.  Find out who!
