Championing cellphone safety, on the roads, and, in the hands of travelers, must be taken beyond (a-)musings.   In a recent March issue of Parade (published in "The Star Ledger of New Jersey", and in "The Record"), it was suggested that cellphone users are speaking too loudly, and that a warning light cued to the cellphone, might politely warn -- My response, in an approximate version (as I did not jot down my response to the paper exactly) is below.  A further issue, is a permit to operate "the cellphone", because of its internet capabilities.  If smoking, drinking AND DRIVING, have an age limit, can it not be considered as well, for the world of wireless NETWORKING?
The Problem (see p. 7 of March 25, 2007 issue of Parade):  People speak too loudly on their cell phones in public places.  [This is the result of an AP poll conducted.] The author's "NEW IDEA" --  Could a decibel meter work to alarm, the offending user?]

My response:

Cell phones carry too far, in almost all instances of use, except to the person on the other end of course, who can never hear you, at all.

Like public & restaurant smoking, it should be considered to ban cellphone use from indoor places such as: libraries, banks, post offices, the check-out counters of shopping marts, police/fire stations, as well as outdoor places [busy intersections, airports, and other high traffic areas.]

A warning light is too late (like the car collision upon you), and "bad breath!"

Beyond this, needing to constantly use the cellphone, is poor planning, if only, because it jeopardizes traffic safety.  When will the phone ring? should be done in the office, not on the road, and school students should be in school, not answering their phone.

Should taxpayers be paying for security issues, that omit cellphones and wireless devices?   IF CONGESTION CAN OCCUR ON OUR ROADS, AND FOR THE AIRWAYS, IS IT NOT POSSIBLE IN THE WIRELESS AIRWAVES?  Do contact me, if you have an idea about this! I feel that a stationary-USE only policy should be RECOMMENDED, if not legislated.  The absence of such leaves us in 'Dire Straits'.  In the meanwhile, I have abandoned my cellphone (cellular service).
