The Knight is arguably the most interesting piece and it can at times be the most valuable due to its ability to jump over other pieces and deliver smothered mate. The value of the Knight varies. The closer the Knight is to the center of action the more valuable it is. The further away, the less valuable. That is why it is impportant to post the knight in a place where it is strong and where it cannot be exchanged or driven away. Because Knights usually comes out first--since the other pieces are blocked up by their own side's pawns--a chess player skilled in Knight Technique can shorten a game considerably. In this collection of Knight games and examples I am including some famous short games where the Knight is the star of the show. I like the Knight so much that I propose to the chess world that we change the name of the Knight to "Dragon." The diagram below shows the octogonal pattern of the Knight moves. Study this pattern and burn it into your mind and think about it when considering Knight moves. This will help you both in considering your own moves and the possible Knight moves of your opponent. Another aid to improving your Knight skills is an interesting game based on the Knight Tour that can be found at the Troyis website.
