1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. Nf3 g5 4. h4 g4 5. Ng5 h6 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. d4

This variation of the King's Gambit Accepted is the cornerstone of our opening repertoire since it shows the highest winning statistics of any opening variation. The 7th move in this variation--d4--produces 66% wins for White. For example games with this move click here.

For an experiment I have entered the move Nxf7 into the Chessgames.com sacrifice explorer and found 678 games in which this sacrifice was performed. Of those games White won 675. This was not only for King's gambit variations but also included various other openings such as the Fried Liver Attack. Here is the page.

We have found a tutorial on the internet in PDF that shows Nc3 for White's seventh move but statistically it produces only 60% wins for White so it is slightly inferior. Nonetheless you may find the tutorial interesting so we have made it available to you and have placed the games in PGN form on this page.
