Bishop Self Interference
The Bishop needs a clear diagonal. The clear diagonal is the Bishop's key to power and without a clear diagonal the Bishop is worthless. In this game Black moves Bh6 when the "book" move is Bg7. The general principle is that the Bishop can go to the Rook's file instead of the Knight's file and, in fact, sometimes such a move is beneficial but if the Bishop moves behind a pile of Pawns it is all blocked up and cannot contribute to the defense of its fellow soldiers. Nor can it attack the enemy. Once the enemy Bishop is blocked up it can either be ignored or it can be attacked. Often just the threat of attacking a Bishop crippled like this is enough to destroy the entire game. This game is a King's Gambit but similar positions arise in other openings.
