Imprisonment

In chess, as in war, it is wise to take prisoners. Sometimes the simple push of a Pawn can lock up a piece and we need not even bother to take it off the board, just let it stay in prison while we merrily attack the enemy knowing he is now the equivalent of a piece down. In the animated diagram if Black tries to free his Bishop he uses up valuable time and if he just abandons it, his game is crippled.
