White does not have to accept the gambit pawn. But--with the exception of the Falkbeer Counter Gambit--statistics show that the refusal of the pawn is unfavorable for Black. Here are some of the variations. NOTE: The opening information given here is based upon Opening statistics derived from the websites listed below. In addition to these website we have analyzed some of the data with Fritz 8 to arrive at our repertoire recommendations. Most of the games that were analyzed statistical are master level games, if you do not play on the Grand Master level you may be more comfortable playing openings more suitable for your own level. My own preference is to follow the repertoire I have placed here in the hopes that in this way I will become more acquainted with Grand Master techniques. To memorize or not to memorize? That is the question. Basically what I do to learn a new opening is to place my notes on my desk near the computer and then play the openings on the internet referring to the notes. This helps me to learn a new line. But mere memorization is not enough, try to find out, or figure out, what each and every move does, so that when the other player deviates from the given line, you will know what to do. We have tried to provide that information on this website but it may not all be there so it is up to you to find answers to your own questions.
