Piece Exchange

An important part of chess is the exchange of pieces. When we go to the supermarket with a dollar, we seek to get a dollar's worth of food with it. When we are told that a Rook has greater value than a Knight and the opportunity arises to "win the exchange" we may do this but is it always the right thing to do? In other words are piece values absolute and if not how do we judge their value. We may in fact gain a positional advantage if we give up Rook for a Knight. How do we know what to do and how to do it where piece exchange is concerned? That's the whole idea of this section.
