Pawn Knots
The Pawn Knot is an arrangement of Pawns that occurs in some games that consist of doubled pawns apart by one square and one Pawn that is supported by the rear Pawn and which supports the front Pawn. The Pawn Knot arises when Pawns are exchanged When making exchanges one should take into consideration when and how the Pawn Knot will arise, although this is usually not done and so the Pawn Knot usually arises incidently. The Pawn Knot interferes with mobility and so can be taken advantage of by one side or the other. The Pawn Knot can be used to lock the center to allow a flank attack or it can be used to prevent a flank attack. This can be useful if one side has a King that is not properly castled. In this diagram White needs to free its pieces by cutting oopen the Pawn Knot. To do this, White attacks the front of the knot with f3. In some instances the rear pawn of the knot can be attacked
In this diagram the Black e6, f5 and e4 Pawns constitute the Pawn Knot.
