The primary purpose of this website is to classify all of the ideas of chess. We have to make one exception--the openings-- because while most of the ideas of the chess middlegame and endgame can be counted and classified, when you get into the openings you are dealing with something too large and complex for one website. Yet once you have learned all of the endgame and middlegame positions listed on this site you will still need to learn the openings if you want to become a master. At least 25% of your chess knowledge should be opening positions. Thus if positional and tactical knowledge alone gives you a rating of 1500, by learning a good repertoire you should be able to improve you rating to at least 2000.
One way to do this is through the use of one of the many software programs available on the internet. One such program is the the Chess Position Trainer. To download click here. The main problem with the CPT is its tendency to malfunction. Also I had some degree of trouble in trying to figure out how to get it to do some of the things I wanted it to do. I do like the chess flashcard idea, school teachers use flashcards to teach math so why not teach chess the same way? A new version is coming out soon, maybe it will function better than the one now available.
The best thing to have is a really good easy to use book or set of books with a great, easy to use repertoire. I believe I have found this in two books entitled "Chess Openings for White," and "Chess Openings for Black.T hree-time US Champion Champion Lev Alburt, famous for his ability to turn aspiring players into masters, teams up with two-time U.S. Champion Roman Dzindzichashvili and young international star Eugene Perelshteyn to give you a complete repertoire of opening play-as well as a review of all openings and an explanation of the principles of playing this crucial stage of the game. And although these books concentrate on the first 20 moves or so of a chess game, they never leave you hanging without a plan. The authors make sure you know the themes and ideas so that you can follow up your great opening play with winning strategies. Let me offer you some advice from Chess Coach Donald T. Steers: "PLAY 1.e4 ! At your level (below 2000) you need to stay in tactical open lines to get the best result from being White. Do not be in a hurry to move into a 'positional' style; learn to attack with the King's Gambit, and even with the Danish!" (Maybe even the Scotch Gambit as recommended in our above mentioned books.) Here is a list of gambits that I have found, the most complete such list on the internet. All will give you a lively game so take your pick. It comes from Wikipedia.
Statistics show that the King's Gambit is one of the best openings for White. A player knowledgeable in the tricks and traps of this opening can make short shrift of his opponents. So if you want to chop 'em up and spit 'em out let The King's Gambit be the top man on your totem pole. My idea is to try for the Allgaier Gambit variation.More examples here. If your opponent refuses to allow it you still wind up with an open game which favors tactical players. If he declines the gambit or If he plays the various King's Pawn defenses such as French, Sicillian or so forth I have worked out the answers to each and every defense based on statistical and practical considerations. Or see above mentioned book--"Chess Openings for White, Explained." I want you, the reader, to undersand that I am currently now engaged in research as to which is the best possible opening for White to use. I am using the "Chess Openings Explorer" which lists move by move statistics to find the statistically best one and so far Allgaier's Gambit seems to be it. This gambit also fits our theory from Coach Donald T. Steers that the playing style for under 2000 players should be tactical. You are, of course, free to disagree and seek a more positional opening.
King's Gambit--Sample Minigames.
King's Gambit Declined
The best way to decliine the KG is with the Falkbeer Counter Gambit. This is the "bust" that Fischer was looking for. Even so, with good play it can be beaten. I believe good counter play against the Falkbeer should involve sacs.
1. Falkbeer Counter Gambit
2. Fischer Variation
Opening Repertoire For Black
2. For Black in reply to e4 I play the French Defense. The closed variations of his opening can be tricky and tactical and if your opponent does not know what he is doing he will lose the game right then and there. Even if he does know what he is doing Black has a good defensive game with counterplay on the Queen side. The open variations are to be played au naturel--in my idiom this means you need not study the variations, just play the natural moves. Nor do you need to wear clothes, by the way. Nothing in the USCF or FIDE rulebooks require the wearing of clothes.
Notes
French Defense, Advance Variation
French Defense, Winawer Variation With Qg4 and Poisoned Pawn
French Defense, Tricks and Traps
French Miniatures
The Semi-Slav--A Solid Defense
3. For Black playing against d4 I choose the Semi-Slave Defense. Another nice and easy opening, play it naturally, keeping in mind the ideas you played with the Colle System, wait for your opponent to screw up and chop him up!
Slav-Defense Collection 1
Slav-Defense Collection 2
Slav-Defense: Blunder Collection.
In order to better check out the above opening system I suggest you obtain a good set of opening books. Before you do that check out the internet material I have listed and find some more of the same for yourself on the internet. If you agree with my choices proceed with your book purchases. Otherwise continue your research to find the openings that are right for you. But the bottom line is that In order to improve your game you must have a good opening repertoir.
