We cannot resist the fascination of sacrifice, since a passion for sacrifices is part of a Chessplayer's nature--Rudolf Spielman |
Understanding when and how to sacrifice is very important. Patzers will frequently kamikaze their pieces in the hope follow up with a strong attack only to find their hopes dashed and their dreams of victory flying out the window. To understand when and how to attack I have prepared this page.
A sacrifice will work if:
1. Pieces can quickly be brought into the attack. For example if you calculate that you need to bring a Rook in for a successful attack after the sacrifice make sure you have a Rook on an open file before the sacrifice and it is ready to be lifted into place as needed.
2. You have a lead in development. This means you have more pieces available to attack than your opponent has to defend. Bishop sacrifices are especially potent if the Bishop is on its original square such as Bf1xb5 or Bc1xh6.
3. If tempi is gained during the follow up to the sacrifice either by the enemy King fleeing check or enemy fleeing moving to avoid capture and you can use this extra time to move in more of your pieces then the sacrifice is more likely to succeed.
4. Bring in the Queen as soon as possible. The Queen is the most powerful piece and it should be used to crush resistance. Counterplay against the Queen involves attacking the Queen and trying to trap it.
5. Blocking and restricting your enemy in every way possible aids your attack and prevents him from counter attacking. Sacrifices on f5 and f6 often block your enemy. A sacrifice on f7 can force the King to f8 giving you even more time to bring up your forces.
6. Exploit weaknesses created by the sacrifice. If the sacrifice created an open line use that line to attack your opponent. 7. If you captured a pawn when you made the sacrifice, exploit the weaknesses caused by the pawn loss.
8. Sacrifice again if need be. Give until it hurts! A double bishop sacrifice is one example. In other insances Bishop and Knight sacs occur. For examples of multi piece sacrifice see the games of Morphy.
9. If sacrificing Bishop be ready to use Knight and Queen combination to attack with. Be sure both pieces are ready to cooperate in such attacks.
10. If we are doing a Knight sacriice be sure that it opens diagonal lines for the Queen and Bishops exploit.
