Dynamic Sacrifices

We cannot resist the fascination of sacrifice, since a passion for sacrifices is part of a Chessplayer's nature--Rudolf Spielman

A sacrifice is like an Atom Bomb. For example towards the end of World War II the allies were clearly winning. Yet the Japanese would not surrender. A ground invasion of Japan would result in the deaths of countless GI's due to the mountainous terrain of the Japanese islands. The Japanese could hide in the mountain caves and conduct a guerilla war for years and years. And so it was decided to drop the Atom Bomb which ended the war then and there. In chess if you have a winning position there is still the question of how to win. "The hardest game to win in chess is a winning game," said Tarrasch, one of the world's greatest chess teachers. The way to end the game right away is to drop the Atom Bomb. Study the sacrifice methods given on this website and make sure you have the position to bring about a successful sacrifice and then do it. Laugh when your enemy cries his crocodile tears and pleads for mercy! Tell him you want to hear him say two little words, "I resign." If you are losing the game, sometimes a well placed bomb will turn the tide. Many games have been won with unsound sacrifices. If you have nothing to lose you are in an excellent positon to gamble since the odds would them be in your favor! And make no bones about it, chess is a gambling game. By treating it as such you will enjoy many victories that more conservative players would screw up.

Understanding when and how to sacrifice is very important. Patzers will frequently kamikaze their pieces in the hope follow up with a strong attack only to find their hopes dashed and their dreams of victory flying out the window. To understand when and how to attack I have prepared this page.

Ten Keys To Dynamic Sacrifices

By "Dynamic Sacrifice" we are referring to sacrifices of pieces not Pawns. "Dynamic Sacrifices" may be "Sham Sacrifices" in which a piece is regained shorly after the deed is done or a "Dynamic Sacrifice" may be a Real Sacrifice in which the piece is never recovered. In addition a sacrifice may be "Position" or "Tactical." By "Positional we mean the piece will not be regained nor will the enemy King be mated but a compensation of some king in position will be attained--for example if you get Pawns for the sacrificed piece the Pawns may become powerful in the endgame. By "Tactical" we mean that you will gain a piece and/or Pawns and/or mate for the sacrifice. In addition there are 3 major kinds of sacrifice, sham, speculative and thematic. What kind of sacrifice are you doing and why?

A sacrifice will work if:

1. Pieces can quickly be brought into the attack. For example if you calculate that you need to bring a Rook in for a successful attack after the sacrifice make sure you have a Rook on an open file before the sacrifice and it is ready to be lifted into place as needed.

2. You have a lead in development. This means you have more pieces available to attack than your opponent has to defend. Bishop sacrifices are especially potent if the Bishop is on its original square such as Bf1xb5 or Bc1xh6.

3. If tempi is gained during the follow up to the sacrifice either by the enemy King fleeing check or enemy fleeing moving to avoid capture and you can use this extra time to move in more of your pieces then the sacrifice is more likely to succeed.

4. Bring in the Queen as soon as possible. The Queen is the most powerful piece and it should be used to crush resistance. Counterplay against the Queen involves attacking the Queen and trying to trap it.

5. Blocking and restricting your enemy in every way possible aids your attack and prevents him from counter attacking. Sacrifices on f5 and f6 often block your enemy. A sacrifice on f7 can force the King to f8 giving you even more time to bring up your forces.

6. Exploit weaknesses created by the sacrifice. If the sacrifice created an open line use that line to attack your opponent. 7. If you captured a pawn when you made the sacrifice, exploit the weaknesses caused by the pawn loss.

8. Sacrifice again if need be. Give until it hurts! A double bishop sacrifice is one example. In other insances Bishop and Knight sacs occur. For examples of multi piece sacrifice see the games of Morphy.

9. If sacrificing Bishop be ready to use Knight and Queen combination to attack with. Be sure both pieces are ready to cooperate in such attacks.

10. If we are doing a Knight sacriice be sure that it opens diagonal lines for the Queen and Bishops exploit.

Notes: This section is continuously being revised. So come back from time to time to see the changes we are making. If you have knowledge of thematic sacrifices that are not listed here, please do send them in. Be sure to include actual games--preferably master games--that have been played.

MORE THAN 5000 AMERICAN LIVES WASTED IN THE WAR IN IRAQ.

Is our greed for oil worth it?
"You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it, to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq, to get their heads blown off, for the president's amusement."
