NCBI Philadelphia presents both general and specialized workshops to the public at various times during the year.  We also work with groups of all sorts, based on their needs, including long term organizational development. The structure of each session and of the overall series helps participants build trust and community.

Leaders' Training (Train the Trainer)
The Train the Trainer Institutes teach participants all the steps required to lead the Prejudice Reduction and Conflict Resolution Workshops. These workshops may be either 3 days (locally and near Washington DC) or 5 days (near Washington DC). Participants learn how to heal the emotional and institutional impact of discrimination. They also have an opportunity to develop their own leadership skills and practice leading the workshop models. Those who attend these NCBI Institutes are eligible to join NCBI Chapters in their own communities. NCBI Philadelphia can provide financial assistance to participants who intend to become active chapter members.

NCBI Philadelphia and NCBI Delaware generally offer one Train-the-Trainer each year in the Philadelphia-southern NJ-Delaware area. Our most recent local Train-the-Trainer was May 13-15, 2008 in Philadelphia.

"Building Bridges" Prejudice Reduction Workshop
Typically presented as a full-day workshop, Building Bridges is a participatory program that reduces the harmful effects of prejudice and discrimination, and begins to explore the cycle of systematic oppression. The workshop increases awareness and teaches specific skills that empower individuals to be effective allies on behalf of other groups.

Effective Conflict Resolution Workshop
(featuring the NCBI Controversial Issue Process)
The Effective Conflict Resolution Workshop is an interactive program that teaches participants to become more effective in reducing tough inter-group tensions. Participants learn to locate the underlying issues in any conflict situation and to utilize effective communication skills for resolving conflicts.

The NCBI Controversial Issue Process was designed to train leaders how to deal with tough controversial issues in a way that builds bridges.  It provides a structured methodology for airing and listening to entrenched positions on both sides of an issue, and then reframing the issue to include each party's concerns.  This process gives leaders a way to take on some of the most heated controversies in society today, such as affirmative action, gay / lesbian marriages, trans-racial adoptions, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Building Bridges Across Differences AND Effective Conflict Resolution
This training is open to all, and is particularly well suited for Human Resource managers. It is a powerful one-day experience guiding participants through practical, hands-on skills to effectively challenge assumptions around racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, religious intolerance, disability discrimination and more in a supportive productive way.

Participants gain practical skills for addressing diversity and controversy. Participants also explore the assumptions we hold about others and ourselves, and how they affect us in the workplace.

Violence: Its Effects and Our Proactive Responses
This one day workshop is experiential. Experienced leaders encourage each person to participate at their own comfort level.

Participants learn about violence and its' deep and varied effects, gain skills, and increase motivation to do something about violence. We explore many parts of violence:
* What is violence?
* What is at the root of violence?
* How is violence affecting us and others in our communities?

Exploring violence in this way motivates us to learn when and how we may address violent or potentially violent situations in non-violent and thoughtful ways. This workshop model can stand alone; start empowering strong leadership teams around violence prevention or be the centerpiece of sustained school, organizational and community strategies for the prevention of violence. It is relevant for multiple audiences, and can be designed specifically to involve youth or adults in violence prevention leadership.

Building Community
Using Panels and other interactive formats, we help groups learn how to support each other as teams, or as members of a community, regardless of whether they have different backgrounds or divergent views about an important issue.

Facilitated Small Group Discussions
Using Dialogue, Listening Clinics and other small group practices, we provide opportunities for additional in-depth discussion of issues. We customize these formats for organizations that are doing well and want to do even better, and for organizations in crisis.
