The June 2001 issue of the Papers of the
Bibliographical Society of America gave Wayne's Arthur Ransome:
A Bibliography a very positive review, calling it 'a bibliography
that could well be taken as a working model for anyone engaged on
a bibliography of a fairly well documented modern author. The extensive
narrative notes of the circumstances of each item's publication
and its relation to Ransome's biography give a fascinating instance
of a bibliography serving as a creative biography. It is hard to
conceive a better introduction to Ransome's literary career.'
The April 2001 issue of the Book and Magazine
Collector has an article about Arthur Ransome, by Janet and
David Whitehead, which includes a nice compliment about Wayne's
new book: 'All of Ransome's publications, including his magazine
contributions and translations of his works, are detailed in Wayne
G. Hammond's excellent new Arthur Ransome: A Bibliography,
jointly published by St Paul's Bibliographies and Oak Knoll Press
of Delaware as part of their 'Winchester Bibliographies of 20th
Century Writers' series. All the important editions are listed,
and there is a list of works about Ransome as an appendix, as well
as a detailed index. As usual with bibliographies, there are only
a handful of illustrations, but the book is produced to a high standard,
with acid-free paper and a sturdy cloth binding. The individual
entries are detailed, and include descriptions of dustjackets -
not always the case with bibliographies. All in all, this is an
excellent book, and can be highly recommended.'
