Arielle du Pape

Arielle du Pape
Lady Arielle du Pape staring wistfully into the distance - by Armand Vierrier

Physical Description

Arielle is a very beautiful young woman with hazel eyes and long dark hair, arranged in a rather avante-garde manner with a shorter bob around her face and longer tresses further back. Her slender figure is enhanced by the fine courtly dresses and her simple but elegant jewelry. The overall appearance is that of an aristocratic lady, and that is what she is.

This effect, however, is slightly weakened by a slightly disshevelled appearance, as if insufficient care was taken to maintain the perfect look. Her bearing is unconsciously graceful but her demeanour is often distant and sometimes haughty. She does not seem to reserve her hauteur for those of the lower classes, but instead for her equals in status, if not in intellect.

A rather avant-garde artist that her family patronised, once made an ink drawing of her sitting on a wall looking wistfully off into the distance. He managed to get most of the drawing sketched and inked before she stirred from her daydream. When he asked her what she had been pondering on, she had looked slightly embarrassed. Expecting it to be upon one of her many admirers, he tactfully decided not to press the question, but then she told him about this wonderful problem in mathematics, to do with calculating the area of an arbitrary shape. For the next ten minutes, she bored him with descriptions of the problem, using his picture of her to illustrate the various ways of approximately calculating the area, and he was glad to escape when a maid distracted her. He later presented her with the drawing as a memento of his stay at the Chateau.

Background

The youngest of four daughters of the Marquis and Marquise du Pape, Arielle has inherited the talent for Porté, along with a deep thirst for knowledge that her varied education has not quenched. Despite her somewhat bookish nature, she does enjoy the beautiful countryside around her home and can be found wandering around alone discovering the world around her.

With a family deeply involved in the court scene, she has recently made her debut in society. By this time, she was already betrothed to Jean-Michel de Crieux, the third son of the Duc de Crieux. This was the attempt to patch up the relationship between the two families, badly damaged by the disastrous engagement between one of her older sisters and the second son of the Duc de Crieux, which ended when her sister scandalously broke it off. Unfortunately for her, she does not love Jean-Michel and regards him as an ignorant idiot with no sense of empathy. For his part, he regards her as a wilful young filly, to be wooed and broken in...

Arielle's story begins in Hunted and Huntress.
