The Language of the Fan

No lady deserving of that name would be seen at a formal occassion without a fan. While the language of the fan is Castilian in origin, its was quickly adopted by the cortesanas of Vodacce, who elevated it to an genuine art. Nowdays, it is used by aristocratic ladies as a discreet method of communication with her admirers. Its use has extended throughout the continent, but it is found mainly in the courts of Castile, Montaigne and Vodacce where no ball, party or celebration can happen without the elaborate and subtle passing of messages between lovers, suitors and admirers.

The language of the fan is made up of innumerable movements that even vary from country to country and from province to province, but the following movements are commonly accepted throughout Théah. However, remember that a fan is still used as a fan and prop to accentuate normal conversation and gestures. Ladies are not constantly speaking the Language of the Fan. Usually a significant look passes between the parties and then to the fan to indicate the lady is signalling.

Fan closed in the left hand
I am unmarried / not engaged / not in a relationship
Fan closed in the Right Hand
I am married / engaged / taken
Fanning herself with the left
I would like to talk / I'm open to a conversation
Fanning herself with the right
I would like to dance
Snapping the fan open
Don't approach / Go away
Snapping the fan closed
I don't love you / I'm not attracted to you / I'm not impressed by you
Fan held near heart
You have conquered my heart
Fan held near right shoulder
Do not betray our secret
Closed fan resting against the right cheek
When can we meet alone?
Closed fan resting against on the left cheek
You annoy me
Fan covering the face with the right hand
Follow me
Fan covering the face with the left hand
I belong to another man
Grasping the closed fan with both hands
Please forgive me / I beg your pardon
Grasping the closed fan with both hands and handled pointed up
I promise I will have my revenge (upon you)
Fan closed on the lips
Kiss me already
Opening the fan partially
The number of shown rods specifies a meeting time. One rod is 9 am. Each additional rod adds an hour.
Idly watching her fan as she waves it
We are being watched
Running a finger along the edge of the open fan
You're cruel to me
