Roderick Cavaunagh

Roderick Cavaunagh

Physical Description

Physically, he is fairly tall, with a well-shaped slenderness. His dark hair cascades down neatly, rarely out of place even in the worst of circumstances. His smouldering, dark brown eyes have a piercing, astute look about them, above finely sculpted cheekbones that a Vodacce craftsman could only dream of shaping. His every movement has an effortless, flowing quality to it, like oiled silk, utterly poised and in control.

His clothing tends to be formal, in the style of an officer's finest dress garb, though he has not, to date, served in any armed forces. Well-tailored, conducive to free and fast movement, these are the hallmarks of his wardrobe. He is rarely without a scabbard at his waist, his preferred example being one he had custom made to contain both his paired blades.

Background

An interesting exemplar of Avalon noble youth, Roderick attained his majority under the reign of Queen Elaine, as the scion of Duke Charles Cavaunagh, a wealthy parliamentarian who purchased as fine an education as was available in Carleon, and Elanor of Lothian, who since childhood brought him up on tales of Avalon's heroes of legend.

With the return of the Sidhe and the defeat of the Castillian Armada writ large on his formative years, Roderick grew up with a sense of purpose and resolve born of Avalon's growing status. As the country, so the man. With his parent's blessing, he studied at length both the courtier's trade and the swordsman's art, studying the techniques of Elaine's knights as well as touching upon the elán of the Montaigne style, the flair of Castille and the precision of Eisen, Tutors brought from afar. He came to prefer Soldano, the difficult-to-master art of fighting with a paired case of swords, a technique which served him well when called upon to duel.

It would perhaps have been better had Roderick simply stuck by the wishes of his parents, progressed into a scholar, a gentleman and perhaps one day a knight or even a member of parliament in his own right. However, such are the ways of youth that he has tended to be rather more... dissolute. Blessed with good looks, he was cursed with the will to use them in a rakehell manner. His calm, self assured poise and grace are lethal in the context of crossing swords or social boundaries, and there are some who would darkly mutter about him being the ruin of many a young beauty.

He could make a case for his actions as merely gallantry and chivalry taken to their logical conclusion, and has the brazen effrontery to actually try and do so. He is a patriot, enamoured of the potential for Avalon to stride forth and make her mark as a united nation.

A scoundrel, a rake, perhaps those badges fit him. But he is no tyrant, nor excessively petty or cruel. He moves through life easily, and if he provokes friction it is mainly as fallout from his amorous adventures. For all his insouciant, devil-may-care attitude, if you shove a wrong in his face, he'll try to right it. Put a fair maiden in distress within a five mile radius, and soon the 'in distress' may be gone. Possibly followed shortly after by 'maiden'.

At the conclusion of his education and to make him a more rounded individual, He has embarked on something of a grand tour, to see the world and perhaps make what he can of it. The fact that a few irate fathers of certain young women were planning to flay him alive and use his skin for swaddling-cloths may or may not have had anything to do with this. His sojourn on the continent may ruin him, it may refine him, it may even reward him.

Roderick's story begins in Sea Dogs.
