| Donald
Knuth's tau epsilon chi is a typesetting system created
specifically for his monumental series The Art of Computer
Programming. ..... Since its creation, TeX has come to be a standard for mathematical and high-quality typesetting, with many extensions available either as macro packages or specialized programs and a number of commercial implentations. Its H&J algorithm (hyphenation and justification) has even found its way into commercial programs such as Adobe's InDesign (by way of URW's HZ program named in honour of Prof. Hermann Zapf). ..... Because of its academic nature, and Prof. Knuth's decision to place the underlying algorithms in the public domain, TeX has engendered a vibrant user community, with many user's groups, including the US group, TUG, with a rich collection of macro packages, fonts and documentation, much of which is available at CTAN. Here I list on-line documentation which I consider of especial significance. There is a separate listing of traditional printed books on TeX. Additions and corrections are welcome. |

Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, others | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| First and
foremost, TeX is a system for typesetting documents which contain
mathematical formulas. Until its advent, mathematics was extremely
difficult (and expensive) to typeset properly, with the sobriquet,
``penalty copy'' often being applied. |
