 Style Manuals

 Guides

Since style manuals are typically made available to assist in the production of the publications of a given group, they are not typically viewed as a profit item, and thus lend themselves naturally to being made freely available electronically, The Chicago Manual of Style notwithstanding.
..... Interestingly, there has been somewhat of a backlash against certain style manuals attempting to move forward, putting the older manuals in a new light.

 On-line Manuals

US GPO Style Manual Cover
The United States Government Printing Office Style Manual 2000

PDF and HTML versions made available as part of GPO Access. Topics range from general advice to authors and editors through rules for capitalization and compounding, and of course, how to typeset the Congressional Record.
..... Produced using ``acomp.exe'' apparently a custom typesetting system. With the appropriate fonts loaded, the printed .pdf is all but indistinguishable in typographic style from a 1945 edition in my possession.

Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers at the University Press, Oxford

fifteenth edition, March 1904.
..... Partial HTML with complete (small) page images.

Fourth Edition (1990)
..... Bitmap image .pdf produced by Image Alchemy.

Interinstitutional style guide

In marked contrast to the US GPO Style Manual above, the .html is the source, and the .pdf was produced using Adobe Acrobat Web Capture. Described by one person to whom I pointed it out as, ``spectacularly bad'' I find it reprehensible that communication could be so subordinated to expediency.
