 manuals and guides

Printing has always been a ``hi-tech'' endeavour, and technical references on it date back almost to its inception as texts such as Moxxon's Mechanick Exercises and Giambatista Bodoni's Manuale Typographicum attest.
..... Computer books, manuals and other documentation tend to be an uneven lot, ranging from wonderful to unintelligible, here I've tried to pick out some of the especially well-done texts.

Real World FreeHand 8
Kvern, Olav Martin.

(Berkeley, California: Peachpit Press, 1996).

ISBN 0-201-87485-7.

This, is the best computer book of any sort I've ever read. Although specific to the Macintosh, most information in it is applicable to the Windows version of FreeHand, or with its antecedent, Altsys Virtuoso (Kvern authored the Virtuoso user manual). Previous editions of this book covered v3, 4, 5.0/5.5, and 7. Unfortunately, no further editions are planned, however much of the useful pre-press and printing information in this book is available in the author's Real World InDesign.
