Before one can set type, it must be cast, before it is cast, a mold must be made---it was arguably in the production of molds where Gutenberg's primary contribution was made. To produce such a mold though, one would first cut a punch, a steel bar onto which a mirror image of the desired character is cut.
..... Type was made so for four-hundred years, changed first by the invention of the pantograph, then phototypesetting, and finally, digital typography.
