Better
Type: Learn
to see subtle distinctions in the faces and the spaces of text type. Achieve
legible, beautiful, and expressive type every time. Binns, Betty. (New York: A Roundtable Press Book, Watson-Guptill Publications, 1989). ISBN 0-8230-0484-8. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Exhaustive
study of the effects of type on a page and the possibilities of minor
variations. Excellent both for learning to truly see type in and of
itself as a mass on a page with a unique character of its own and to
appreciate the subtle intricacies of the interaction of individual
characters. |

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Incredibly
nice book for contemporary printing. Bringhurst is a Canadian designer
and published poet. Some signatures are done in two colors and the
binding and paper on the hardcover are especially nice. Good overview
of proper typography and the current condition. Decent discussion of
contemporary typeface designs and designers, with good notes for
beginning research on some topics. Appendices include Sorts &
Characters, Glossary of Terms, and Further Reading which is a good
bibliography, divided by topic. |

| Although
only corrected, not updated in the 1992 edition (and scarcely updated
in the 1988), this is still an excellent discussion of some of the
finer points of graphic design and typography. Lots of illustrations
(188) and very nicely designed and printed with an excellent historical
overview. |
