Fascinating book which delves into a century of type, 1890-1990, treating each decade in fair detail. Very nicely designed and printed using Frutiger with 395 illustrations, 265 in color. Discusses designs, designers and has been updated in a new edition to cover the last decade of that century.

Incredibly nice book for contemporary printing. Bringhurst is a Canadian designer and published poet. Some signatures are done in two colors and the binding and paper on the hardcover are especially nice. Good overview of proper typography and the current condition. Decent discussion of contemporary typeface designs and designers, with good notes for beginning research on some topics. Appendices include Sorts & Characters, Glossary of Terms, and Further Reading which is a good bibliography, divided by topic.

Although only corrected, not updated in the 1992 edition (and scarcely updated in the 1988), this is still an excellent discussion of some of the finer points of graphic design and typography. Lots of illustrations (188) and very nicely designed and printed with an excellent historical overview.
