 Hardware

 boxes &c.

Here is a list of hardware which I've found exceptionally well-suited to doing graphic design work. Some of it is especially intended for such use, but other bits are more general tools which suit how I work.
..... Your mileage may vary.

 NeXT

NeXT Cube
NeXT Cube, MegaPixel Display, old-style keyboard, mouse

``The Deloreans of the information Super Highway''.
--- John Perry Barlow''.
My NeXT Cube (a gift from my brother-in-law) has the 25MHz '040 upgrade, 56MB RAM and is running OpenStep 4.2 with the Y2K patches. Its consistent, elegant, customizable UI, Services, Display PostScript and the synergy with which these combine to create the most consistent and usable out-of-box experience have kept this on my desk as my main machine for over a decade now.

NeXT Laserprinter
Laserprinter

The first affordable PostScript laserprinter with a resolution high enough (400 dpi) to nicely set subtle typeface designs.

Color Printer

Canon was an early investor in NeXT, so a re-badged Canon BJC-8x0 was an obvious choice when NeXT made a color inkjet.

 Input/Output Devices

Wacom ArtZ 6 x 8

I'm fortunate in having drivers and cabling which allow this to be connected to my NeXT Cube, IBM ThinkPad and my wife's Macintosh. Unfortunately, Windows only allows the connection of one tablet to a system at a time, so I've not been able to connect it to my Fujitsu pen slate.

Microtek ScanMaker 600ZS

This scanner is supported on my NeXT Cube by ScanMaker.app by Black Albatross. Thanks!

Citizen Printiva 600C

(Citizen seems to've quit supporting this---try www.alps.com for the company they licensed the MicroDry technology from)
.....Printouts are lightfast, waterproof and archival. Although incredibly slow (each page is fed through once for each ribbon which is used on it) the print quality is excellent for the price.
