THE OLD COVERED BRIDGE

THE SHOULTS BRIDGE TODAY

The following was written by Sylvia (Shoults) Baughman about Alda, her brothers, sisters, cousins and friends and the Shoults Bridge, pictured above, built more than 125 years ago.

The Old Covered Bridge

The road that leads Home 'cross the Old Covered Bridge
Where long, long ago lived a gang of kids
Named Johnnie and Dora, Etta, Alda, and Cora
Then came Jay, Charlie and Lester, Elmer, Tina and "Sib"
These were the kids who crossed daily the--
OLD COVERED BRIDGE.
Now many are gone, there are few left you see
But the Bridge stands as strong as it used to be
And today, as I gazed at the water below
As if it did not know and did not care
Just where it was going or when it got there.
It flows round the bend at the foot of the ridge.
And divides the land that belongs to these kids.
I cannot help wondering if when this life ends
And we start on that journey that has no bends
If somewhere along the way there will surely be
An OLD COVERED BRIDGE that we can see
Standing sturdy and strong--
And this gang of kids to which we belong
Will be waiting there until the last one came
And listening close we'll hear our name--
Then across this OLD COVERED BRIDGE once more
our way we'll wend
Hand in hand to the journey's end
Will the water be more silver or the sun more gold
Than it was to us kids in the days of old?
We will talk over old times, share old memories, and then
We will thank the good Lord we are together again.
