WALT'S SQUARE DANCE CALLING EXPERIENCE

WALT PETERMAN
SQUARE DANCE CALLER
13411 Woodbridge St.
Woodbridge, VA 22191-1724
(703) 494-2556

Although Walt attended local square dances as a teen, he took lessons in the early 60's in the Phillipines and again in the 80's in Virginia. He soon learned that modern square dancing bears little resemblance to the dances of old, i.e. Birdie in the Cage, Little Brown Jug, Over the Wave, Log Cabin in the Lane and many others. He quickly became a self-taught caller when the club caller in the Phillipines returned to the states. (There were only 40 some odd calls on the program at that time). He called for the San Miguel Tropicades and called at several festivals including the American Embassy in Manila, and on a boat while travelling to the embassy. Upon their return to the states, their children, like most became involved in other activities and square dancing went on hold. It wasn't until the mid 80's when Walt took up the mike again teaching classes in his local church, initially. With his early classes, he organized the Grand Squares, Prince William and later a camping club, the Hitch N Go Squares, and also calls for the Woodbridge Senior's Club. Walt has called at various local area dances, festivals, numerous first-nighters and the Virginia State Convention in 15 of its 18 years of existence and will be on staff for the 19th state convention. He called at the National Square Dance Conventions in Baltimore, Charlotte, Cincinati, Indianapolis and St. Louis and served as Education Coordination Room Chair for the 49th National at Baltimore. He calls and teaches through the Plus level as well as easy Contra, lines, mixers and the CDP program. Walt has attended several Caller Clinics in addition to Randy Page's Caller's School. He is a member of the American Caller's Association, The Virginia Square Dance Caller's Association (VASCA), and currently serves as the Northern Region Chair; the National Capital Area Square Dance Leader's Association (NCASDLA), where he has held several offices and is the current President); and the Virginia Square and Round Dance Association (VASARDA). He is very intrested in youth as they are the future of square dancing. He has been involved in many youth activities over the years and has been trying desperately to begin a youth program in the Woodbridge area. Walt is available to call for your club dances, conventions, festivals, or special one-nighters.
