THE MARSHALL FAMILY


Our ancestor is Benjamin F. Marshall who married Esther McPeek about 1786. They were the parents of David who married Ann Mears, our ancestors connected to the Peterman family. Records in the courthouse in Cambridge, Ohio reflect land transfers to his two sons, Benjamin, Jr. and David.

Doc Marshall served in both the Army and the Navy during the Civil War. He enlisted in the Army Co. B, 78th Bn at Zanesville, Ohio. He became ill due to TB exposure in 1862 while on duty in Tennessee and was honorably discharged as a result of the TB, Two years later, he enlisted in the Navy for 4 years and was sent to Philadelphia, PA to enter the US Marine Corps, He served until March 27, 1868. He wrote a book entitled "Afloat On The Pacific" about his exploits. He practiced medicene in Pleasant Valley near Zanesville, Ohio. He was familiar with several languages.

Benny Marshall died from the effects of the measles contracted at Camp Chase; Columbus, Ohio and is buried beside his grandparents. The G. A. R. has placed a small American Flag and an emblem on the grave. Quite a number of McPeek family are buried near him.

Granville, Jan. 10 - The death of Jacob Smith Peterman, 82, occurred last night at the home of his son, Frank Peterman, in the Welsh Hills. He was the son of the late William Peterman; he was born in Franklin County and was a veteran of the Civil War. Surviving are two sons, Frank Peterman, of the Welsh Hills and Charles B. of Cleveland, and five grandchildren. The funeral will be held Sunday at 1:00 o'clock at the home, and burial will be in the Jersey Cemetery by the side of his wife who died several years ago.

In the early days, he drove his horses for hire. He and his team worked on a pipeline along route 62 out of Johnstown, Ohio. a picture appeared in the Johnstown Independent Newspaper. During WWII, he worked at the Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio assembling K-Rats, etc, for our troops. He and Blanche reportedly lost a set of twins at birth.

Severely burned when she threw kerosene into the cook stove as she was hurrying to prepare dinner. An explosion resulted, the house with most of its furnishings were destroyed. She was rescued by her Teen son Roy L. Peterman as he threw a rug around her and rolled her on the ground. She carried the Burn scars to her grave. She was a very friendly lady who loved to talk to people.

Services for Walter G. Peterman, 68, of 30 Oregon St., Croton, will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Crouse and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Hankinson officiating. Burial will be in Hartford Cemetery, Croton. Mr. Peterman died Friday morning in Licking Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks. He was born Aug. 8, 1907, in Monroe Twp., Licking County, to the late Frank and Blanche (Dague) Peterman. He was a member of the Welsh Hills Baptist Church of Granville, Modern Woodmen of America, National Association of Retired Persons, and a retired roaster operator of the Nestle Corp., Sunbury, retiring in 1970. Surviving are his widow, Alice (Weekley) of Croton; three daughters; Mrs. Dwight (Barbara) Hall of Croton, Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Bemiller of Johnstown and Mrs. Jenoah (Wilma) LaRue of Rt. 3; (sic - Newark); two sons W. Edith Alice Peterman, 85, of Johnstown died July 11 at Northview Senior Living Center. A homemaker, she was born Dec. 21, 1912 in Licking County to the late Alda (Shoultz) (sic Shoults) and William John Weekley (sic John William Weekley, Jr.). She was a member of Welsh Hills Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Technical Rubber and Nestle's.
